It only made me more embarrassed. I shifted my weight from afoot to another, mentally slapping myself to speak or at least utter a word and save my poor ass from this awkwardness. “I- I wasn’t, um, I wasn’t-, ” an awkward small escaped my lips which only made him hold his own smile but he failed miserably, “so um when you shift do your clothes go to shred?” Xander licked his lips and cleared his throat, a sly smile forming on his lips as if he was recapitulating something in his mind.

I’ll go shift over by that tree” he says pointing to the opposite direction. “I’ll meet you back here, and you can follow me as we run. Then we will come back here when done.”

My breath catches, feeling too aware of my own presence, and a scent that wouldn’t stop messing with my mind now that I was closer. “We don’t have all day. Start.” One of the elders interfered, and I blink fast. I can’t… “Are you afraid to shift?” Xaden’s voice. I look up to find him looking at me, studying me. “Yes.” I reply, knowing I just messed up everything. I will probably be sent out or queried. But to my surprise, Xaden steps into my space, his voice lowering as he says, “I can help you.” Every instinct in me goes on edge. No. He can’t. Because there’s nothing to awaken.

XD said as Xander turned to grin at him. “Watch out!” XD yelled as he pointed in front of him but it was too late as a thud was heard and the car skidded to a stop. “Fuck….was that a cat?” Xander asked as he put off his seat belt and got out of the car. “That was too big to be a cat.” XD replied as he got out into the pouring rain and walked in front where he saw a man unconscious with a phone in his hand. *****

Xander ran towards the woods at the back of their house. He noticed Xavier’s silhouette there. He held the letter tightly in his hand, almost wrinkling it. “Vie!” Xander called, breathless. “We received an answer,” he added quickly. His usual deep voice was slightly high pitched from the excitement. Xavier emerged from between the trees wearing nothing but his work pants. His bare feet sank into the green moss. His hair was still wet from his swim in the lake.

There was a dragon tattooed down his whole back. Looked so lifelike. I was half expecting it to start moving. My eyes trailed further down to his lower back, where the letters S.I.X were inscribed. So wait six isn't actually a number, but an acronym? He turned slightly, enough for me to get a view of his front, but not for him to see me standing there.

The atmosphere in the car was stifling. As they neared the neighborhood, Mr. Xander suddenly asked, “Xena… is she home?” “No. She moved out a while ago,” Shane replied casually. Mr. Xander went quiet. No one dared say more at the mention of Xena. Everyone was afraid one wrong word would set him off again. “Is… is there a fire somewhere?” Shane mumbled, squinting at the thick smoke rising in the distance. The comment pulled everyone’s attention toward it.

Valerie: Morning sunlight spilled across the terrace, warm and soft against my skin as I stepped outside. The breeze carried the faint scent of pine and fresh earth, the quiet hum of the pack grounds far below. Everything felt calmer now, steadier, like the world had finally exhaled after months of choking tension. “Val.” I turned. Xavier stood in the doorway, dressed in a dark shirt with the sleeves rolled to his forearms. His eyes, those steady storm-blue eyes, held something different today. A warmth. A nervousness.
