I was pushed inside. The chamber smelled of smoke and ozone. A low fire burned in the hearth, throwing long shadows across dark wood and velvet. The Dragon King stood near the window, silver goblet in hand. He did not turn at once. The silence stretched until my pulse hammered in my throat. “Come here Fox.” His voice was soft when he finally faced me. Golden eyes glowed in the dim light, cold and absolute. “You were brought here for one reason only—to satisfy my desires. No one else touches what is mine.”

Most were about history, leadership, strategy. But there were a few that surprised me. Poetry. Classic literature. A worn copy of The Count of Monte Cristo. I smiled despite everything. Xavier reading poetry felt… unexpected. I pulled the poetry book out. Flipped through it. Some pages were dog-eared. Lines underlined. “The wound is the place where the Light enters you.” My throat tightened. I put the book back so fast you would think it burned me. Then I moved to his desk.

Remembering that Sean had helped him during the shower, and since he seemed eager to read the book, Xavier nodded and said, "Alright. You can read it." "This young child is rather prideful," Sean thought. He sat Xavier down on his lap, wrapped his arms around him, and opened the picture book. Xavier's ears turned red as he listened to Sean's deep voice from behind him, feeling the vibrations from his chest as he spoke.

"Of course," Maya said and laughed. She took the necklace out of the box and placed it with the letter. She carefully took the photo album and opened it. But instead of old stories from my grandmother’s life, the pages were scrawled with strange symbols and sketches—shorthand in her handwriting explaining the purpose of different runes and sigils. Flipping through the pages, there were sketches of wolves, and the last page that she’d written in had a detailed rendition of a nightmarish wolf-beast that made my blood run cold at the sight of it, it’s eyes smudged over with charcoal in the shape of a protective rune. My heart raced when I realized what I was holding. This was no ordinary journal, it was a spell book.

Alice could hear the loud creaking of the bed and, somewhere along, just listening, she could not help but visualize it too. She imagined flesh pumping, breasts grabbing, and bodies sweating. Alice ended up turning to Xavier, who looked just as awkward... or all worked up. He was gulping and sweating a bit. “Maybe we should watch a movie,” he suggested, and Alice nodded. Xavier had a TV in his room. He turned it on and went straight to HBO. “Oh, nice. It’s a love story,” Alice muttered. She sat up next to Xavier and leaned into him. He smiled and automatically put his arm around her.
