Chapter 118: In Another Life, I Would Be Your Son RILEY I nodded eagerly, scooting over to make room for him to sit on the edge of my mattress instead. The book was about a brave little wolf who went on adventures and learned important lessons about friendship and courage. Mr. Xenois had read it with different voices for each character, making me giggle despite the heaviness in my chest. When he'd finished the story and closed the book, I'd looked at him carefully in the soft light from my lamp.

Smiling, Rosa lifted it higher, cupping its arm carefully in her palms. Her eyes sparkled like starlight as she looked into the kitten’s round gray orbs. “Cute!” Rosa giggled, holding the kitten up in front of her face. Her laughter echoed lightly as the kitten tilted its head, staring at her curiously, as if wondering who she was. “Where’s your mumma?” “Meow! Meow! Meow! Meeooww!” Rosa giggled again. But then, a thought crossed her mind, “I want to take you with me, kitty.” she whispered.

Fey just nodded and didn't ask any more questions as she watched me wash my red-liquid-splattered palms. After showering and dressing, I bumped into Xavier in the living room. He stood in the center, his golden eyes searching every inch of the room like a hawk. "What are you looking for?" I asked, confused. Xavier wrapped his arms around my waist and placed a sweet peck on my lips. "A fat Calico cat that usually roams around If you see it, just kick it out," he explained. "How could I do that to such a cute animal as a cat? They are Jasmine's favorite."

Phoenix answers while rubbing her belly making me smile and nod my head. “Well, I will have a plate of six dumplings your Daddy folded in just a few minutes, they’re nearly done,” I reassure her, making her nod her head vigorously. “It smells yummy,” she giggles, wiggling herself deeper into Ares lap getting comfortable with him. “Good, they do smell yummy, tonight you’ll get to meet lots of people and eat all kinds of yummy food,” Kitty mentions while tickling Phoenix making her giggle. “I can’t wait ta meet lots of people!” Phoenix speaks excitedly, then frowns shrinking back further into Ares’ lap.

Bells jingled, and a young woman behind the counter gave me a nod before turning back to her book. I didn’t know what I was looking for. Maybe something to help me understand Aaron. Maybe a way to find a language I’d never learned—one that didn’t involve boardrooms, silence, or avoidance. In the children’s section, I ran my hand along the spines until one caught my eye. A story about a fox who had no name. Who wandered from home to home trying to remember where he belonged. Too on the nose? Probably but I bought it anyway. Back in the car, I stared at the cover for a long time. I didn’t even open it. Just held it.

An object like a cup in the shape of a goblet is on the next sheet. “Is this a picture of that famous thing?” Xander exclaimed "I think so!" “But, why does this picture feel alive?” Xander stared at the picture. Then looked at Alice who was also staring at him. “I feel weird about these names! It feels a little familiar, but I don't remember it!” Xander only glanced at Alice, “I want to read that book first! And go downstairs, if you still want to be here that's fine, but if there's anything suspicious call me right away!” Xander took one of the books and carried it downstairs.
