Ya Book Club! Novels & Stories

Chapter 1 I almost didn’t come back. The invitation sat on my kitchen counter in Brooklyn for three weeks—thick cream cardstock, gold-embossed lettering, the same high-school crest we used to doodle in the margins of our notebooks when we were supposed to be paying attention. Ten-year reunion. I traced the date with my fingertip until the ink smudged into a faint golden blur. Every time I thought about clicking “Going,” my stomach twisted with the memory of him; Owen Hale, the quiet boy who sat two rows behind me in senior English, who never spoke unless called on, who once handed me a pencil without looking up when mine rolled under his desk and clattered against the leg of his chair. The b

Instead, I said, “What the hell kind of fun would that be?” “Brick...” He sighed. “Hayden,” I countered, setting my hand on the desk and arching a single eyebrow. “Relax. I got this. Now tell me everything you know about her, so I can figure out how to play my cards right.” He grumbled under his breath and ran a hand through his hair again. “I don’t know much. She started some book club that only Gabby, Kaitlynn, and Nash’s sister are in. And she likes romance novels.”

Albert rolled his eyes. “OOoo, you love checking all the taboo trope checkboxes. I’m telling Alex to pick a teacher/student book for our next book club read.” Agustín smiled. “He’s in the book club, too?” Albert asked. “A lot of people connected to the pack are.” I shrugged. “So, how do my friends and I join this book club?” Albert asked. “Also, I’m the only one teaching her this semester. Come January, we’re not in violation of any school rules.”

Ellie's POV The next day, I dress the hell up like Sia and sneak out in search of cheap thrills with Anna. Anna told me about a social club called DYK. Its logo is an open Bible. The music here is mainly Electronic Dance Music and I keep hearing songs from Alan Walker and Swedish House Mafia. The dance floor is filled with excited bodies moving under blue lights, and would you look how they move. Anna screams into my ear as loud as she can. "So what do you think?"

Mia says fanning her face. Oh yeah, somehow in the past two weeks us girls have been getting together on Fridays to discuss our book of the week, kind of like a book club I suppose? Tonight we’re at Steph and Julian’s house while X and Julian are downstairs playing pool. “Fuck me that was such a hot chapter!” Alina squeals and then takes a big gulp from her glass of wine. “I’m telling you guys, you need to role-play that scene! Julian and I did last night,” Steph beams.

He shifts back; putting a seat between us and truly looking horrified. Bibah simply shakes her head at our childish shenanigans and takes a sip of her iced latte, metal straw clinking in the Hydro Flask. “The Awoo Book Club’s pick for this week is H.P Lovecraft.” She pats the voluminous book atop the pile and I notice it’s the library copy of H.P Lovecraft’s Omnibus 3. “I’m so excited to roast his ass.”

Every family gathering came with subtle hints, suspicious questions, and not-so-subtle reminders about marriage and children. Unfortunately for them, I still had businesses to run, deals to close, and an empire to manage. Romance wasn’t on my agenda, and neither were babies. On my way out of the hospital, I stopped by the gynaecology department to see my older sister, Nora. “Hello, Spider,” I teased. She didn’t even look up, eyes locked on a stack of reports. I reached over and plucked them from her hands. I wasn’t expecting to see Chloe’s name,William’s wife. Why the hell would she book an appointment here?
