I don't want to react this way to him. To my right a door opens and the witch queen steps through. Still at his beck and call. I feel a little less of an idiot with her presence now. "Ready?" She asks Thorne. He nods and takes her hand and guides her to me. She lays a book down on the bed. I can't quite read it from this angle.

I swallowed and felt him lean closer, his warm breath brushed against my ear as he whispered, "Try it." "Me? Hell no. I’m not really a ‘sit on a throne’ type of girl." I protested. "How can you be so sure if you’ve never tried it?" I paused, and looked back at him. He was challenging me, and I couldn't quite tell if I really liked him or sort of hated him for that. But I never turn down a challenge. "Go ahead," he added. Crossing the room, I climbed up the step and touched the brown arms of the broad chair. The first thought in my head was that the throne was for kings and masters. But as my fingers glided along the edges, I corrected my train of thoughts.

Then came a sound from far below. A howl.. The silver thread between my hand and Caelan's wrist suddenly burned. Caelan staggered.I caught him.His eyes turned black. But this time, he didn't look at me. He looked toward the floor.“It's underneath us.” “What is?” His lips parted. For a moment, he seemed unable to speak. Then he whispered, “The First Throne.” The ground split beneath our feet.Caelan grabbed me I screamed as darkness swallowed us. His arms locked around my waist. The documents flew into the air above us.

And through it all That same woman stood. Unmoving. Unstoppable. Silence. She could still the earth beneath her feet move The wind calm Then she saw a throne. A Black iron throne The vision had a Cold. Unforgiving aura And seated upon it Her…. The silver-haired woman. Alive. Unbroken. Unchallenged. Around her Kings, clans and warriors All kneeling. All bowing. Not in respect. In submission. In fear. _____________________________ The old woman’s body trembled violently.

I'm standing before the throne again. This time, the room is brighter. The throne is empty. I walk toward it. A child stands beside me. I can't see their face. A voice echoes through the chamber. Choose. I look around. "Choose what?" Power or love. My heart pounds. "I choose love." The room shakes. The throne cracks. The child reaches for my hand. Then another voice speaks. Kael. Aria. I turn. He's standing behind me. But blood covers his chest.

She sat down at her desk and opened the Book of Ashes again. And on a new page, in clean black ink, she wrote: VI. The throne is not inherited. It is taken. And if I must become a monster to keep it, then let them tremble. Let them kneel. Let them burn.

The Throne shatters and grows in the same breath, spines twisting like serpents. And in the heart of it— Us. Burning. Breaking. Becoming. The Throne roars a promise in my skull: If I can’t have you, I’ll take HER. And then— Everything goes white.

Chapter 44 – The Throne She Shouldn’t Take “Aria,” Kael whispered again, stepping forward like a man chasing the last light of a dream. “You don’t have to do this.” But she didn’t turn. Didn’t blink. Didn’t even breathe. She just kept walking—one barefoot step at a time—toward the flaming throne, its jagged arms outstretched like it had been waiting for her all along.

The staircase climbed impossibly high into the darkness. Leading nowhere. Or perhaps somewhere far beyond the world. At the very top stood a throne. The throne from my vision. The Throne of Stars. The throne hidden beneath the kingdom. The throne every ancient power was searching for. And seated upon it was a figure. Motionless. Silent. Wrapped in chains made of silver fire. A prisoner. Still asleep. Still bound. Yet somehow more terrifying than anything we had seen so far. The golden eyes immediately focused on it. The thirteen fortresses turned toward it.

The guards opened it, and I stepped inside with them. The people inside turned to me. My heart was beating rapidly, not used to the sudden attention I was receiving. They looked at me in awe from head to toe. I raised my head and looked at the throne. The King, Queen, and Axel hadn't arrived yet, but I was asked to sit on one of the chairs next to the king and queen's throne. I was nervous to see everyone looking at me. "His Majesty King Edmund Hastings, His Majesty Queen Charlene Hastings, His Royal Highness Prince Elric Axel Hastings," the guard loudly said, announcing the arrival of the three people.
