BETWEEN DUTY AND HEART

The grand chandelier overhead cast a warm, golden glow over the long dining table, but it could not chase away the quiet heaviness that filled the room tonight. It was the anniversary of the day his parents had passed — a date Mrs. Reyes had quietly mentioned to me earlier, saying, “He locks himself away most years. Tonight… he tried to face it instead.”

Guests had come and gone hours ago, leaving behind only the faint scent of expensive wine and heavy conversation. Now the house was silent again, save for the soft clink of glass as I cleared the table. I moved quietly, careful not to make a sound — I knew how much he valued peace, especially on days like this.

“Clarinda,” he said. His voice was rough, slower than usual, as if he had to reach for every word.

I set the tray down gently. “Yes, Sir?”

He lifted his head, and for a moment, I forgot how to breathe. There was no distance in his gaze now — no cold authority, no careful reserve. Only pain, raw and unmasked, and something else I dared not name.

“Stay,” he said softly. “Just… stay for a little while.”

“Why are you afraid?” he asked. He leaned forward a little, and the scent of wine and cedar wrapped around me. “I will not hurt you. I have never wanted to hurt you.”

“I am not afraid of you, Sir,” I answered truthfully. “I am afraid of… crossing a line I have no right to cross.”

He let out a short, bitter laugh. “Lines. Rules. Expectations. That is all my life has ever been. And tonight… I am so very tired of them.” He reached across the table, and his fingers brushed against my hand — light at first, then curling gently around mine. His skin was warm, his grip unsteady but achingly careful. “You are different, Clarinda. You do not look at me and see money. You do not look at me and see power. You look at me… and you see a man who is very much alone.”

He stood up slowly, swaying just a little, and walked around the table to stand beside me. When he reached for me, his touch was not greedy, not demanding — it was desperate, like a man clutching the only piece of driftwood in a storm. He pulled me gently to my feet, and for the first time, he looked down at me not as a master to his maid, but as one weary soul to another.

“Tell me to stop,” he whispered, his forehead resting against mine. “If you want me to stop… say it now.”

“Yael…” I breathed his name — not Sir, — just him.

 That was all it took.

His arms wrapped fully around me, pulling me flush against him, and his lips met mine with a rush of feeling he had held locked away for years. It was not gentle at first — it was hungry, aching, a release of everything he had buried deep inside. But when I kissed him back, tentatively at first, then with all the quiet longing I had tried so hard to deny, he softened. His kiss became slower, sweeter, full of a tenderness that stole the breath from my lungs. He kissed me like I was something precious, something fragile, something he had spent a lifetime waiting for.

He lifted me easily into his arms, and carried me not to the servants’ quarters, but up the wide staircase to his wing — to the heavy, closed door I had never dared approach. He laid me gently on his bed, his movements still careful, still asking without words if this was truly what I wanted. When I pulled him down to me, he made a low sound in his throat and held me as if he meant to merge our very souls together.

There was no rush, no shame, no hurry. Every touch was deliberate, every caress a silent confession. He knew every curve of me before he even saw it, every shiver I gave him answered with one of his own. He whispered my name over and over, like a prayer, like a promise, like the only thing that had ever truly mattered. And for those few hours, there was no employer and no employee. There was no rich and no poor. There was only us — two people who had found something worth risking everything for.

When dawn began to paint the edges of the curtains pale gray, I woke to find him already watching me. He was sober now — his eyes clear, his expression unreadable — but his hand still rested protectively on my waist.

“I am sorry,” he said quietly. “I should not have… I took advantage of you.”

I sat up slowly, pulling the sheet around me. “You did not take anything, Yael. I gave it. All of it.”

He looked away for a moment, then back at me, and I saw fear there — fear of what this meant, fear of what he had started, fear of losing the only light he had found in years.

 "This changes everything,” he said.

“I know,” I answered softly. “But if you will let it… perhaps it changes us for the better.”

He did not reply. He only pulled me close again, burying his face against my shoulder, and held me there as the sun rose over the estate — the line between master and maid, between duty and desire, blurring until it vanished entirely.

  • BETWEEN THE KITCHEN AND THE MASTER'S BEDROOM   IN THE MIDST OF TRIAL

In the days that followed, life within the high stone walls of the Harrison Estate turned into a quiet, relentless torment. Mara made it her sole purpose to make every moment of my stay as difficult and humiliating as she possibly could. There was no task too small, no excuse too petty, no chance she would ever pass up to remind me exactly where I stood — and exactly how little I was worth in her eyes.

My hands trembled as I fastened the buttons of my blouse, smoothing down the fabric as if it could hide the guilt and fear churning in my stomach. I had no right to be here, no right to have crossed that line. But even as shame washed over me, I knew I could not run. I did not have the luxury of walking away. My mother’s medicine ran out every two weeks, and the bills for her check-ups piled up faster than I could ever hope to pay them. My younger brother Kiko’s tuition

  • BETWEEN THE KITCHEN AND THE MASTER'S BEDROOM   THE FIRST RECOGNITION

  • BETWEEN THE KITCHEN AND THE MASTER'S BEDROOM   BEHIND THE HIGH WALLS

The heavy iron gates of the Harrison Estate swung shut behind me, and for a long moment, I just stood perfectly still, clutching my small, worn bag tight against my chest. My fingers dug into the frayed fabric, grounding me as the reality of where I was truly settled in. This was it. The place I had prayed would take me in. The job that would keep my family afloat, that would stop the bills from piling up, that would keep my brother’s dream of college alive.
