Now I’m being punished for a mark I don’t even remember and the only clue I have is a pair of haunting gray eyes that don’t belong to the man I’m supposed to marry. Who marked me? And why does everyone fear the answer?

I woke up to a mark carved into my neck. It was still fresh as though it had been carved only a few hours ago. The words echoed through my mind. “You’re mine.” The unfamiliar voice was low but firm like he was claiming something that had always belonged to him. Then came the sting of fangs against my neck, yet a moan of pleasure escaped from my lips instead. His cold gray eyes softened almost immediately— Then darkness. My eyes snapped open and my pulse hammered against my ribs. Those gray eyes… They were not my brother’s. Even now, I could almost remember his scent, it was unfamiliar. Why did I feel a questionable amount of pleasure? One I haven’t felt in my twenty years of living. I stared at the ceiling trying to put all the pieces together when the door opened. “You’re finally awake!” Elara pushed in and pulled me into a tight hug, “I— I thought I’d never get to see you again” her voice broke. “I’m fine sister” I struggled to break free from her breathless hug. I touched the mark on my neck and surprisingly, it was there. The grey eyes. The strange voice. The mark. The unfamiliar scent. None of it made sense. But another question nagged at me, how did I get here? How long have I been unconscious? “What happened?” My sister swallowed hard, trying to hold back the tears that had formed in her eyes. “You hit the wall,” Elara lowered her eyes. “When…” she couldn’t even bring herself to call his name. With the way everyone in the pack avoided calling his name, an outsider would believe saying his name aloud would somehow summon him. “…Alpha Sylas struck you and you became unconscious” she said in a whisper and her words pulled the memory of what happened earlier to the surface. Alpha Sylas had asked me to meet him at his office and I was a minute late. I tried apologizing to him but all to no avail. The second I opened my mouth to speak, his hands struck my cheeks and my back slammed into the wall, hitting my head on the concrete floor as I landed. Even after I hit the wall, he didn’t move to help me. Instead, he looked down at me and watched me bleed without blinking. “Get her out of here” he had said and I watched him walk to his table before I saw darkness. That explained why I was here but it didn’t explain the mark on my neck. Who could have done this? “How long have I been unconscious?” I picked up the mirror again. “Three days” I stared at the mark long enough like it was going to reveal the reason it was there. “Why do I have this?” I pointed towards the mark “It’s not from three days ago. It seems fresh” “Wait, Lyra. Where did you get this?” Elara seemed more scared than surprised. Her palms trembled as she touched the skin around it. “I.. I don’t know. I woke up to it” my heart raced and sweat droplets had already formed on my face “is it that bad?” I asked but she didn’t respond. “What does it mean?” I became more desperate for an answer. Elara didn’t bother to answer me. I could see fear in her eyes. She knew what it meant but it seemed like revealing it would bring some kind of trouble to her, to us. “Alpha Sylas is becoming uncontrollable lately” she held my hands and showed a faint smile. He had always been this way. He never needed a reason to assault me over the smallest thing. Sometimes I wondered if hurting me was his daily ritual. “We need to hide this” she quickly reached for the dresser searching for a concealer. “Sister” I followed her “Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine” I sat down. I knew it was a lie. I had told myself those words countless times and nothing had ever changed, and nothing would. It was my fate. The sooner I accepted it, the better for me. Elara’s sad eyes peered into my skin and I could tell she had a message for me but didn’t know how to say it. “What is it?” what seemed like fear washed over me. “Our brother demanded I bring you to his office immediately you wake up” I forced myself to smile. He couldn’t even wait till I felt better. I wasn’t surprised. “We just need to make sure he doesn’t see this”. *** Elara helped me get dressed in the clothes he had provided for me. He made sure the sleeves were long enough to hide the bruises he had tattooed on my body and also made sure the length got to my ankles. I stared at the mirror and watched as she concealed the mark on my neck. I couldn’t help but wonder what the mark meant. I was sure it wasn’t to be taken lightly, the way Elara had reacted. “Why do you think he wants me in his office?” I needed a distraction. “Lyra, I really don’t know” she sighed rubbing the back of her neck and I put my hands over hers “Sister, I know you’re aware of the reason.” She always rubbed her neck when she was hiding something. “I wish I could tell you but you know he doesn’t like his business out there” She was right. If he found out I knew beforehand, he’d probably torture me until I have no ounce of strength left. So I understood her keeping it from me. She was scared. She was only trying to protect me. After all, it’d only be a matter of time before I found out. “All done” she helped me stand and we walked to his office. **** I walked behind my sister this whole time until we got to the office. My sister’s hand trembled as she brought her hand to knock. “Enter” he called out. His voice sent shivers down my spine. I hesitated before going in with Elara and I shut the door quietly. “Finally. She’s awake from her beauty sleep” Alpha Sylas walked around his desk towards me. He scanned me before taking my hand and I whined internally at how he squeezed them in his. My gaze swept across the room. Elara’s husband sat quietly beside the window. Across from him stood another man. Tall. Broad shoulders. He had some kind of aura to him, I was convinced he was an Alpha. “I don’t think you’ve met him before” he smiled at me, the kind of smile that quietly threatens that I shouldn’t disgrace him. “No I’ve not” I tried to keep my voice from trembling. “Alpha Draven. This is my sister I told you about, Lyra” he smiled and I swallowed hard. The man stood up and walked slowly towards me. He circled me but didn’t touch. I tried to match his eyes with the pair of grey eyes I had seen earlier but it wasn’t his. I felt a dangerous feeling towards him. He stopped right in front of me and peered at me like he wanted to see my soul. It made my skin crawl and I took slow steps back. My eyes met my brother’s and he mouthed, “Don’t you dare” His words made me shiver in place. “She’s beautiful” Alpha Draven turned towards my brother, “But…” his eyes moved to my neck and I began trembling. What if he knows about the mark? I didn’t know what to expect. He raised his hands slowly towards my neck “Alpha Draven, it’s nice to meet you” my sister interrupted quickly and walked towards us. “And you are?” He shot a look at her “This is Elara. My other sister” my brother grinned hard. He shot a threatening look at Elara but I hoped he wouldn’t do anything to her. He normally didn’t because of her husband. “Okay” Alpha Draven smiled, moving away from me. “She’ll do” he smiled briefly. “So in five days?” “Yes. My sister is all yours too” Alpha Draven said making his way towards the door. His sister? What does he mean by that? Alpha Sylas smiled. This was the first time I had seen him smile genuinely. Whatever deal he had made with Alpha Draven, it made him really happy. “Really? Did you need to introduce yourself?” My brother yelled at Elara the moment Alpha Draven left. “I’m sorry” she immediately walked out with her husband. “And you—” he gripped my arm hard and pulled me closer, “You took three days to wake up. Do you think you’re worth wasting time on?” “No… I.. I’m sorry” I cried out. “That was Alpha Draven. You’ll get married to him in five days” he tossed me and went over to his desk. Alpha Draven? The Alpha who had murdered his own mate. Every pack knew the story. “But that’s not possible,” My heart sank. “Alpha Draven is ruthless” “I don’t care. As long as I get to marry the woman I love” And that was it. Odette has been Sylas lover for years but Alpha Draven refused to give his sister out to him because of their childhood rivalry which stretched into adulthood. Meanwhile, no family wanted to give their daughter out to Alpha Draven after learning he killed his fated mate and my brother saw it as an opportunity. After all, to him, I’m a useless human with a dormant wolf. Just useless. Until now. “I’m not getting married to Alpha Draven. I’d rather die!” I turned to leave. Before I could reach for the door knob, Sylas had yanked my arm and tossed me to the side. My back collided with the hard floor. He reached out for me again and pulled me up, his claws digging right into my skin. “You don’t get to make that decision,” he threatened. “I get to decide what you do with your—” Suddenly his expression changed like he just seen a ghost and he stepped back. His eyes were locked onto my neck. “You’ve been marked”I got down just in front of a modest hotel. The bus ride was more exciting than I ever imagined. The idea of just siting while the bus moved. The chilly breeze that slipped in through the half opened windows. The chattering between strangers who laughed as if they had known each other for years. Children pointing excitedly at buildings. Was this what freedom felt like? I loved it. I adjusted my bag over my shoulders and walked into the hotel. “Good evening ma’am” the receptionist greeted with a welcoming smile. “How can I help you” Warmt spread through my chest. Maybe, it wouldn’t be so hard living among humans, like I feared. “I–I’d like a room” “Okay, give me a minute” her focus went back to her monitor while fingers danced around the keyboard. After few seconds, she reached out for a drawer and pulled out a key card. “Here. Room 207 is available” She opened a large register “I’ll need your name and how many nights you’ll be staying” My name. My fingers tightened aroun
I sat facing the only window in the room. My feet bounced on the hard floor as I stared at the moon waiting for the right time to escape. As soon as the moon got to its highest point, I reached for the rusted window and pulled myself up. The chattering of the guards began to retreat. It was my cue to leave before the next shift guards would come. I reached for the key which I had tucked in my cleavage. With every move, the chain clicked against the hard floor but I didn’t mind. With the guards gone, no one would notice. I let the cold iron fall to the ground and reached for the iron gates. I reached for the other key and I clicked the door open. Quietly, I walked through the cold and quiet passageway, just the right kind for an escape. I got to the entrance and looked around for anyone. When the coast was clear, I took the path towards the river. The rock laid just before the river and just like Elara had said, the bags were behind it. I took the bag to check for the spray wh
I froze. His eyes went to my neck and he sniffed closer, “But… I don’t recognize this scent”. I’ve been marked? By who? Is that what Elara was keeping from me? I had so many questions but no answers. “Who marked you?!” He cupped the front of my neck, “Answer me.” His grip tightened. “I—I don’t know” His jaw flexed. Something snapped behind his eyes. Suddenly, my back slammed into the wall. “I’ll only ask you one more time” “I— I don’t.” Air. I needed air. “I— I don’t know” He looked away still holding onto my neck and he laughed dryly. Black spots danced before my eyes and I could feel my strength leaving. Was this how I was going to die? By the time he looked up, his eyes had turned bright yellow. “Who the hell marked you?!” His wolf growled past me and mine whimpered within. Tears streamed down my face. “I swear, I don’t know” “Fuck!” He shoved me to the side, “You useless bitch! Just when I found a use for you, you decided to be what you always have!” His voice
