AYLA’S POV

The heavy doors of the Great Hall loomed over me, carved with snarling wolves and crimson sigils. My legs trembled beneath the layers of my gown, but I refused to let Darius see my fear, at least not fully.

The hall was enormous, with a long polished table running down the center, flanked by high-backed chairs. Candles flickered along the walls, casting shadows that danced like predators waiting in the dark.

“Sit,” a deep voice commanded from the head of the table. My eyes lifted, meeting Darius’ cold gaze. He lounged casually in his chair, yet every inch of him radiated danger. Even sitting, he was an Alpha.

I lowered myself into the chair across from him, trying to steady my breathing. Every instinct screamed at me to flee, to disappear, but I had nowhere to go.

Darius studied me like a predator examining prey. “You’re quiet,” he said, his tone flat but heavy with unspoken threat. “Do you always obey without a word?”

“I don’t speak without reason,” I said, my voice shaking only slightly. “Unlike some Alphas I know.”

A flicker of amusement crossed his eyes, almost imperceptible. “Bold,” he murmured, leaning forward. His sharp gaze held mine. “I like bold… but foolish can be fatal. Do you understand that, Ayla?”

“Yes,” I replied, my jaw tight. “But I’m not here to be a victim.”

His lips twitched, half-smile, half-snarl. “Interesting,” he said. “I will enjoy testing that resolve.”

DARIUS’ POV

The girl’s spirit was unlike any I had encountered. Most trembled, cowered, or tried to charm their way to favor. But she… resisted. Even in the presence of fear, her fire burned.

‘Bold and defiant… and yet so fragile,’ I thought. There was something intoxicating about her strength. Something dangerous.

I leaned back, swirling the wine in my glass. “You’re aware of what is expected, yes? That you will carry my heir, obey my house rules…”

“I am aware,” she interrupted, her voice sharper than expected. “But I won’t be anyone’s possession.”

Her words sparked a fire inside me, a mix of irritation and fascination. Few dared speak so freely to me. I wanted to punish her… and yet, a part of me wanted to see just how far she would push before breaking.

AYLA’S POV

The meal was served, but I barely touched it. My eyes roamed the hall, the guards, the tapestries, trying to memorize every exit, every shadow.

“You barely eat,” Darius remarked, breaking the silence. “Are you nervous… or just stubborn?”

I glanced up at him. “Neither. I’m cautious.”

Caution. Yes. That was all I had left. One wrong move and my life would be over.

The Alpha leaned forward, resting his chin on his palm. “Caution is wise. But too much caution makes one predictable.”

I swallowed hard, forcing my gaze to meet his. “Predictable?”

“Yes,” he said, voice low and dangerous. “I want someone unpredictable. Someone who can… surprise me.”

‘Surprise you?’ My stomach twisted. ‘I just want to survive.’

A sudden commotion at the hall’s entrance made both of us turn. A guard rushed in, breathless. “Alpha… there’s a message from the Northern Watch. A rival pack is near the border. They’ve been spotted, moving toward our lands.”

Darius’ expression hardened. He stood, the sheer presence of him filling the room. “Tell the sentries to prepare. I want scouts out within the hour. And stay here,” he said sharply, his gaze locking on me. “You will remain in my sight.”

AYLA’S POV

My heart pounded. Danger was near, and I was still at his mercy. Yet, for the first time, I noticed something… protective in his stance. Not kindness. Not softness. But awareness, like he couldn’t fully leave me exposed.

‘Does he want me safe… or just controlled?’ I wondered. Either way, I had to stay sharp.

Darius returned to his seat, the edge of authority never leaving him. “Do you understand the gravity of your position, Ayla?” he asked quietly, yet every word felt like a command.

“I do,” I replied firmly.

He studied me for a long moment, and I realized he wasn’t just assessing my words; he was testing my spirit. My survival instincts. My courage.

When he finally spoke again, it was almost… thoughtful. “You will need that spirit,” he said, tone softer than before. “For you, for me… and for what’s coming.”

I shivered, unsure if it was the chill of the hall or the weight of his words.

The meal ended in silence, the tension between us palpable. As I was escorted to my chamber, I couldn’t help but glance at him one last time. His eyes followed me, dark and unreadable.

‘This isn’t over,’ I thought. ‘Not by a long shot.’

And deep down, a part of me, against my will, felt a flicker of curiosity. Who was this man, really? And why did he make my blood both freeze and burn at the same time?

I stood on a small balcony outside the Great Hall, watching the forest edge burn in the moonlight.Darius stood nearby, his posture rigid, every muscle coiled like a spring. The guards patrolled the perimeter, whispers of urgency passing between them.“They’re close,” he said, his voice low but steady. “Northern Watch reports they’re moving faster than expected.”I swallowed, feeling the truth sink in. These weren’t just stories. The danger was real, alive, and I was caught in it.“Will you… fight?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.Darius’ eyes found mine, intense and unreadable. “Do you think I let anyone threaten my lands without answering?” His gaze hardened. “Especially tonight.”DARIUS’ POVThe girl watches me like she can see past the surface, past the Alpha mask I wear. DARIUS POV"They're bringing in the girls," Chase informed me as he walked to stand beside me.Soon, a line of girls in a straightened line began to fill the hall, all wearing seductive dresses and flashing smiles at me.. "Attractive," I thought, but none looked peculiar enough to look like my bride. They danced for a while, all flashing their breasts and swaying their hips to draw my attention. I alerted Chase in a dry tone to end the dancing as I was bored with it.....The courtly musicians soon ended the music, and the girls assembled once again in straight lines opposite each other on each side of the wall."The girls have each danced to display themselves and are waiting for you to make your choice, Alpha", the senior nun said in a bow.I stood up and walked down the hall, looking amongst the girls. None seemed to fit my taste, but a few steps ahead, I turned back at a girl whom I noticed I had not really seen dancing at the hall. I walked back to take a look at the girl with h
