"You look like hell."

I glanced up from the ancient text I'd been staring at for the past hour without actually reading. Kael stood in the library doorway, and he wasn't wrong—I probably did look terrible. Sleep had been elusive since the nightmare, and the approaching full moon was doing strange things to my body.

"Thanks for the observation." I turned back to the book, trying to ignore how his presence made my skin prickle with awareness. "Very helpful."

"When's the last time you left this room?"

"Yesterday. Maybe the day before." The words on the page blurred together as he moved closer. "I'm researching Elena's family background like we discussed."

"For sixteen hours straight?"

Had it been that long? Time seemed to move differently lately, especially when the mate bond hummed with restless energy that made sitting still impossible.

"I'm fine."

"You're not." He settled into the chair across from me, and the scent of cedar and starlight made my mouth water. "The full moon affects ma

"Sena, talk to me. What did you see?"Kael's voice cut through the fog of terror still clinging to my mind. I blinked, realizing I was sitting upright in bed, tears streaming down my face. He stood in the doorway, silver eyes wide with something that looked like panic."The children." My voice cracked on the words. "I saw you kill the children."He went perfectly still, the color draining from his face. "Sena—""There was a little girl with pigtails." The images came flooding back, as vivid as if I'd lived them myself. "She was hiding behind her mother's skirts and you—the beast—it just—""Stop." The word was barely a whisper. But I couldn't stop. The nightmare had opened something raw inside me, and the words poured out like blood from a wound. "She couldn't have been more than five years old. She was calling for her mama and you tore her apart like she was nothing."Kael stumbled backward, his face a mask of agony. "Please don't—""A baby, Kael. There was a baby crying in a crib and

"Well, well. Look what the wind blew in."I spun around, my hand instinctively moving to my stomach. The voice had come from the shadows near the kitchen entrance, warm and slightly hoarse with age.An elderly woman stepped into the morning light streaming through the tall windows. She was small and compact, with silver hair braided neatly down her back and eyes the color of storm clouds. Her dress was simple but well-maintained, and she moved with the confident efficiency of someone who'd run a household for decades."You must be the healer," she continued, looking me up and down with frank assessment. "Vera Ashwyn. I keep the house around here, or what's left of it.""Sena Thorne." I studied her weathered face, searching for any trace of fear or resentment. "You were here during...""The night everything went to hell?" Vera's mouth quivered upward. "Aye, I was here. Hidden in the root cellar like a coward while my king lost his min

"Tell me about Elena." I chipped in, picking my nails.Kael's silver eyes snapped up from the ancient text he'd been pretending to read. We sat across from each other in his private study, the fire crackling between us like a physical barrier. I'd chosen the chair farthest from his desk on purpose but close enough to work, far enough to breathe."What about her?" His voice carried the same careful tone he'd maintained for the past three hours."Everything." I tapped my quill against the parchment covered in my notes. "Her family, her motivations, why she chose to destroy you specifically. You said nobody knows her reasons, but someone had to know her well enough to hate you.""Elena was..." He set down his book with deliberate precision. "Complicated.""That's not an answer." I blurted out."She was beautiful, intelligent, and came from the Silvers bloodline—one of the oldest magical families in the northern territories." His fingers drummed against the desk. "We'd known each other s

“You always hide here, don’t you?” I said, stepping into the ruined throne room.Kael didn’t turn. He stood with his broad features back facing me, bathed in fractured moonlight seeping through a broken stained glass window. Shadows of old portraits loomed behind him, the faces twisted by time, maybe war or maybe regret.“Hide?” His voice was flat and neutral. “I don’t hide.”“Right,” I muttered, stepping further into the ruined throne room. “You just brood with dead people watching.”“I don't. I mourn...”“Over people you murdered due to your breakless anger.”He glanced back, his eyes unreadable. “They were my family.”“Ohh!” That made me pause. My chest tightened, I don't know the reason or if it's the mate bond but I held onto the reason I came here. Sympathy had no place in negotiations.“I’m not here to tiptoe around your pain,” I said. “I’m here because I’m done running.”His brow arched slightly. “You’ve decided, then?”I nodded, crossing my arms. “I’ll help you. But only on m

“You lied to me.”I didn’t bother turning around when his footsteps echoed in the doorway. I’d been sitting at the cracked window since dawn, staring out at his dead kingdom and nursing my rage like a flame. The bond hummed between us, carrying his hesitation, but I refused to acknowledge it.“Sena—”“Don’t.” I finally faced him, letting him see the fury blazing in my eyes. “Protection, you said. The bond was for my protection. But that’s not the real reason, is it?”I’ve been thinking about it all. From the moment he arrived at the auction house to how he was in such a hurry to bind us together.Surely that isn’t because someone like him was solely concerned about my safety. He’s a monster. No way in hell did he do that with my safety in mind.Kael stood silhouetted against the morning light, his silver eyes unreadable. He’d changed from yesterday’s travel clothes into simple black, but nothing could make him look ordinary. Power clung to him like smoke, and through our cursed con
