It was small. A spark, a flicker—something so insignificant that it should never have changed his life. But it did. Nathaniel remembered the way the flames spread, slow at first, creeping along the edges of the old curtains before swallowing them whole. He remembered the thick, suffocating smoke curling toward the ceiling, the acrid scent of burning wood and fabric stinging his throat. His hands trembled as he tried but couldn't put it out, his heart pounding in his chest.

We battle side by side, compensating for each other's flaws. We keep taking them down but they keep coming at us relentlessly, their numbers overwhelming. Fire spreads, licking at the wooden rooftops, casting shadows through the smoke-filled streets. When I trace the source, I find out that the fire was started by some men who had secretly followed the beasts. I don't see them until the fire spreads.

Our desire for each other smoldered over the years, sparking here and there but never getting hot enough to ignite. And then it exploded into a wildfire. The thing about wildfires is they burn bright and they burn hot, but eventually, they die out.

Because it would be a great disaster if that happens. The quietness soon acquired suspicions from the outside. They ordered their people one by one to inspect inside the burning house. It looked completely devastated from the outside but since the rest of the cottage was made of stone, the fire is slow on eating it up from the inside. Before they could enter, they heard an ear piercing scream from behind them.

I need more. Grabbin' a bottle, I pour the contents alon' the bar, watchin' as the flames catch and dance along the wood. The fire spreads quickly, crawlin' up the walls, lickin' at the ceiling. I stand there, smilin', watchin' as it grows, the heat warmin' my skin. No fire alarms. No sprinklers. This place is goin' down in flames, and it’s goin' down fast.

Kira turned her head toward the fire. And then it happened. Not subtle this time. Not the shimmer above the crib in a private room that only Jasmina had seen. The fire in the center pit flared—not wildly, not dangerously, but upward and bright, a clean column of light that rose three meters and held for four full seconds before settling back down. The yard went quiet. Forty-odd people staring at the fire. Then staring at Kira. Kira was staring at the fire with an expression of focused interest, her small hands open, the light behind her eyes the same warm lit quality Jasmina had seen in the birthing room.

I had lain awake for what felt like hours, staring at the ceiling, replaying every word he had ever spoken to me, every whisper of danger that now seemed to draw closer with each passing moment. But exhaustion had finally claimed me, dragging me under. And there it was again. The fire. It started softly, like a single candle flickering in the distance. Then it grew, spreading until I was surrounded by a sea of flames. They danced and curled, consuming the ground beneath my bare feet, yet somehow, they didn’t burn me. Instead, their heat seemed to sink into my skin, pulsing through my veins like a living thing. I should have been terrified, but the fire felt almost… familiar.

It was slow motion but so fast that I couldn’t form a single word in my mind. Between the time he dropped the match and the time the entire room was on fire was longer than you think. My eyes followed the fire as it traveled around the room but it was still so fast that a huge gust of hot air blew my hair all over. Black smoke circled around me, filling my lungs and making it hard to see.

“Fire sees us as something that belongs to it. You can sense how much joy it feels with us… as long as we give it the stroking it craves that only we can give it.” Strangely, instead of feeling nervous because of his intrusion, I stayed relaxed. We stood there, holding hands and holding Fire. When the flames started to move lower towards the blackened wood, Lamont requested for me to ask it to leave. I did as he said, thanking it for spending time with us and letting it know that it was welcome to leave. The flames rose higher and then settled into a subtle glow, slowly dying out, leaving only a trail of undulating smoke rising to the ceiling.

She was gently pushing me away, like she was telling me, without words, to let her be. "Leave me alone... It's so damn hot," she muttered. I knelt beside her. I could hear her breathing fast, and I could feel her body heating up. She tugged at the hem of her dress again while fumbling fingers. It was like she couldn't stand the feel of it anymore. "You need to slow down," I said softly. She didn't answer. Just pulled the dress over her head and let it drop to the floor. I looked away, not because I had to but because I wanted to give her that sliver of dignity she was losing by the second.
