Liana stopped in front of me, close enough now that I could see the satisfaction in her eyes.
“I wonder,” she mused, almost thoughtfully, “how he would feel if he found out the woman he married is the daughter of his mother’s killer.”
The words hit me all at once.
I shuddered. Not visibly—but inside, something jolted hard, like the ground cracking beneath my feet.
“What did you just say?” I whispered.
Liana’s smile didn’t waver. In fact, it deepened.
“Oh, you didn’t know?” she said sweetly. “Dr. Allison Reed. Ring any bells?” She tilted her head. “The toxicologist accused of poisoning her best friend. Alistair’s mother.”
