“Look.” Rhys moved a small marble statue of a wolf howling, and the bookcase clicked and moved ajar slightly, revealing another bookcase behind it full of journals similar to the one in Amira’s hands. “Woah,” Amira breathed, drawing closer, her scent a little too heady. Demon was getting a little worked up with her so close again. “How did you discover this?” Amira peered up at Rhys, unaware of how close she had gotten to him.

She kept her tone light, but her gut was doing flips. Christina didn’t answer right away. Instead, she pulled a small object from the folds of her blanket and set it on the table with the kind of care usually reserved for live grenades. It was a book, small and battered, the kind of thing that might get lost in a flea market bargain bin—if you didn’t look too closely at the cover. Leila leaned in. The leather was cracked, the pages yellowed like they’d been left out in the sun for a century too long. The disappointment she felt when she heard no word from her adopted family echoed in her now as she stopped by the glowing fireplace. On top of the book sat a small pair of reading glasses, poised as if the reader had set them down in a rush, barely balanced on the edge. She’d sneak them back to the trunk in the morning. The book was old, with patterns engraved into the leather cover and there were burn marks around the edges, too. Like someone tried to burn the book. Gemma shook her head and tucked the brown leather book away in the spacious cavity. The ornate mirror was harder to handle because of its weight, and Gemma was more careful with it. But she wanted a closer look at it. Its frame looked like silver. Evan was correct. The mirror’s reflection was off. She could not see her own image in it. Gemma needed to concentrate and stare hard into the glass to make out anything.

Win looked less than impressed at the clear dodging of whatever question he’d been asking, but said nothing further. Adom created a magica circle for the pair and they gave a short thank you before stepping through. The room was quiet for a moment as Adom banished Man and Boss old glass and summoned one if his own. She walked down the rest of the hallway to the top of the stairs, and she stood for a minute admiring the large stained glass window at the top of the stairs, of a ship with full sails on a choppy sea.
