This is what my life consists of. I travel the globe killing people for a living. I don’t take any sexual gratification from what I do, I don’t even do it for the money really – although it does pay incredibly well. No, this work; this life, runs in my blood. It’s deep rooted in who I am. By the age of twenty-nine I have become one of the most prolific assassins in the world. Argent’s man, Anarchy, opened the door and retreated to Argent’s office as soon as Violet and Lyria showed up. Anarchy is another gorgeous Assassin that recently transferred from the Canadian division. With his high cheekbones, deep merlot-colored hair, and intense eyes the color of the ocean at dawn, he’s quite a sight to see. We quickly found out that he’s not much of a talker. He’s more the tall, silent type, which was fine by me. We also discovered that he’s uncomfortable with female attention. I give both women a wan smile and take a sip of wine. The scarlet liquid sloshes gently across the rim, letting off a fruity scent.

“Guess you can see that for yourself.” I remained silent, my expression unreadable. I started toward the door, but Casey shifted, blocking my path. “You know,” he said, voice casual, “I’m actually glad he’s gone.” That made me pause. My eyes narrowed slightly, a silent demand for him to continue. Casey’s lips curled into something that wasn’t quite a smile. “I knew what you were from the beginning. Assassin. A famous one, at that.” He tilted his head, watching me carefully. “I always wanted to warn Gerald, tell him exactly what kind of woman he was dealing with. But I didn’t, because I was afraid.”

But the assassin suddenly laughed. Then his body stiffened. A dark liquid slipped from his mouth. Lucian’s eyes widened. “Poison.” The assassin’s body went still. Dead. Cassian cursed softly. “They always carry poison.” I turned toward the second assassin. He was trying to stand. Lucian moved instantly and pinned him down. “You will not die before speaking,” he growled. The assassin stared at him. Then something strange caught my attention. A symbol burned into the assassin’s wrist. A crest.

Gabriel said, “I didn’t much want to be alive. Ten years of waiting, not knowing if the pull would ever lead anywhere. So I found the most dangerous work I could.” She waited. “I was an assassin, Honor. A professional killer. I took contracts — targets — and I eliminated them. That was my life for the better part of a decade.” She stopped walking. He stopped too, hands in his pockets, and let her look at him. Let her take the time she needed to put it together, to decide what she thought of it. He’d learned enough about her to know that rushing her to a reaction she hadn’t fully formed would only make it worse.
