"Then the terrible witch reappeared, astonished by his ugliness and concerned for the princess, who appears pitiful!"

"I have a feeling I'll be seeing you around... Barbie." ​Before I can even process her words, she turns on her heels and sashays away and I watch her retreating back until she disappears down the hall. ​"That's highly unlikely," I mutter to myself, exhaling a breath I didn't realize I was holding... I am never coming back to this den of insanity ever again. How was it possible? When I saw the painting on the easel, it was the same woman again, but her eyes were opened, and they were the exact shade of blue that mine were. The painting was from her waist up, and I saw the exquisite dress he had imagined her in, a deep purple with white beading on it, the royal family's colors. Her hands were placed in front of her and she had two hands on either side of her head, holding the queen's crown above it. He had painted my coronation.

He helped Nichelle completing the puzzle with his instinct. "Who is she?" Stefan found himself asking. This girl had ridiculously long hair. Half of the pieces were about her gold hair. It was annoying. "You don't know? She is Rapunzel. The witch has trapped her in a tower. She is not allowed to go out or meet anyone. But one day the prince climbs up the tower and falls in love with her. He rescues her and they live happily ever after," she narrated the story to him. "She is like me. I am also not allowed to go out. I wonder where my prince is," her shoulders slumped as she sighed. Her statement caused an ache to push against his chest. Her prince was no more.

“What were you thinking? Rapunzel? Really? Hiding out in a tower like some lost fairytale?” Don laughed and began to circle him, with his hands clasped behind his back. “You mock it now, but I know exactly what I’m doing. A tower painted in pink and purple, gold-trimmed mirrors, soft lights… one might think it belonged to a woman obsessed with princesses. Maybe even one who cried over Rapunzel.”

“Or at least, it’s similar to one of his quotes.” She nodded. “Does all of Black Crimson’s art illustrate some fairy tale or another?” I sent her a curious glance. Motioning behind her, she explained. “Well, that one was obviously Rapunzel. And the one before was the Big Bad Wolf, right?” “Holy shit,” I cried, gaping at her before shaking my head and returning my attention to the road. “I think you’re right. I remember another one having some guy leaning over a sleeping woman and one had a mermaid on it, which must be—”

It was really sweet. "That’s a great castle," I replied. "Do you like castles and princesses?" Isabella nodded–again, not looking up from her artwork. "I do too. Rapunzel was always my favorite. Who’s yours?" I asked. Now she looked up at me with a new sparkle in her eyes. "I like Rap-unz-el too! And I like Tiana!" She fumbled out Rapunzel, which was clearly too intense of a word for such a little mouth.

Her hair swept up in soft pinned curls in a half updo. A child sat on her lap, tiny hands clutching her skirt. She perched on a green baroque couch, soft light spilling over her. The room behind her glowed Art Deco, Prussian flair, all luxury and symmetry. The painter was none other than the then Die Wölfe der Nacht (The Wolves of the Night) Baronessa Franziska von Liechtenstein, that 18th-century Prussian noble. Then I realized, this painting was part of a pair, a set. “Why two paintings?”

Rapunzel was my favorite fairy tale in childhood. Part of my stupid innocence believed that there was nothing more beautiful than waiting for years until true love was able to find me. On the long-awaited day, I would certainly be combing my hair in front of a mirror adorned with ivory, and when my prince reached me in the highest tower of a forgotten castle, his golden hair would shine with the purest gold color. He would save me from that incessant wait and, taking me in his arms with all the care with which a flower is harvested, he would gallop us on his white horse among the endless lawns and plains.

Her mom had known all along that she was pregnant with a girl, and she decorated a dream room. While pregnant her mom had hand painted the most beautiful fairytale mural on one wall in the bedroom. It was the one thing that Emily could not change or cover even once she got older. The mural had a large castle with mountains in the background. Around the castle were deep forests filled with magical creatures faries, witches, unicorns, and elves. There was a lake with a waterfall that had mermaids and water sprites playing, but Emily’s favorite part was the castle in the center. On the front steps stood a beautiful majestic white wolf.
