Santa's voice boomed from the doorway, warm and gravelly, like a hearth fire. At 50-something in appearance but timeless in spirit, Nicholas Claus filled the frame, broad-shouldered, belly rounded from centuries of cookies, his white beard trimmed neat, eyes twinkling with that knowing glint. He wasn't the jolly myth; he was real, weary from the endless rush, shoulders carrying the weight of a world's wishes.

With no other option, Abigail moved slowly towards the bench as the woman joined her. Schuyler had prepared for a long time what he would say when he met the boy, however, actually faced with him, all words left him. The soda can hit the floor with a loud clang. Matthew’s brow furrowed. He opened the company group chat in a hurry. He could not find it.

Jean walked to his car and drove off without any other word. Barney shook his head, not wanting to believe as he watched the dust settle. He shuffled into his house, suddenly feeling 10 years older. His joints began to ache more than they normally did as he reached for his phone and dialled Avery's number. He listened to the long ring, and then the operator's voice. "The number you are trying to reach is unreachable at the moment." He took in a shaky breath and tried to call again, but was getting the same response everytime.

Just then, Gianna tugged excitedly at Mr. Dominic's jacket. "Grandpa! Santa!" She pointed toward a long queue of children waiting to meet Santa Claus. Mr. Dominic laughed. "Looks like I've just been given another assignment." He looked toward Bianca. "I'll take her." Bianca nodded smoothly. "I'll wait right here."

“Hoo, hoo, hoooo. What do you want for Christmas, little girl?” “I want . . .” the shy four-year-old began softly. No. There’s no way that’s Ray. Ava nearly stumbled down the step to get to the camera. She took the picture. Santa gave the little brown-haired girl a sucker and helped her off his lap. Ava quickly approached St. Nick and bent down to be eye to eye with him. Her mouth dropped open. It was Ray. “Ray, why are you . . . Santa?” she whispered. “Where’s Phillip?”

“I already knew. I just wanted to see if Jeremy wanted something for himself.” “Nope, just what I said.” “That’s very admirable.” The bearded man helps us off his lap. “You’ll get your presents.” “So my sister will stop falling down the stairs or making people fall by opening doors?” I ask, just to be sure. I don’t want her or anyone else getting hurt. Santa nods but doesn’t seem very convinced. “Where are your siblings?” We point at James and Brianna, who are talking. I see Santa squint. “That girl looks familiar.”

Soon the twins were fed, content, and were playing in the living room playpen waiting for their babysitter. As she found herself running around to get ready for work as she usually did, the doorbell rang. “Good morning,” greeted a tall, slim, smiling man with a well-trimmed beard. He had in his hands a wooden clipboard and a pen. Behind him was a large cargo truck that had other men in gray overalls already unloading several large items. Oh, I think they have the wrong address. I’m sure that I haven’t ordered anything… at least, not yet.
