My wolf replied. I shook off the "what-ifs" that held me back and turned back to the towering oak shelves. My fingers traced the spines of leather-bound books, all of them layered in dust that made my nose itch. "Focus," I muttered to myself. "One monster at a time." I immediately admonished myself. I continued to look until I found the books my dad had recommended. I pulled the four heavy volumes from the shelves. The History of Shadow Entities, The Blood Rites of the Unseen, The Search for Shadows and one volume of Pack Lore and Ancient Threats. I carried them to a secluded corner of the library. The dust felt suffocating, but I wouldn't let anything stop me.

For a moment, he just stood there with furrowed brows, his orbs fixed on the cover. “Zombies are Real?” he read, tapping his fingers on the book. Taking a deep breath, he averted his gaze to the books seated next to them. Using his free hand, he grabbed one. “Supernatural Being.” With his lips curled, he scanned them from back-to-front cover. Immediately after, his mind drifted without prior warning. Something about the titles probed his guts. He just didn’t know what. Should he believe these zombies and supernatural beings were true? If not, how could he explain what he’d seen the night before?

I covered my mouth trying to silent the scream that threatened to spill out of my mouth. There was a reason Antonio was the leader of the gang. I had never seen a man with such strength. I feared for Elijah's life. Before Antonio could attack him again, Elijah stood up and attacked him. “You bastard!” Antonio cried. With a snarl, Antonio launched himself at Elijah, a knife glinting in his hand. Elijah dodged the blade by mere inches countering the attack with a kick to Antonio's arm, making him lose the knife in an instance. Elijah quickly took out his gun. “It's over” he said, pulling the trigger faster than I could say SHIT.

Mom said, her voice breaking, “I love you. I love you so much. But you have to run now. I promise I’ll find you. I’ll come back for you.” “Mom, please!” I sobbed harder, grabbing onto her like a child. But the sound of wolves approaching grew louder, snarls and the pounding of paws. Mom pushed me hard, her voice rising in desperation. “Run, Cal! RUN!” With a broken heart, I turned and sprinted into the forest. Behind me, I heard the terrible sound of my father’s final cry. I risked one glance back, and what I saw will haunt me forever. Alpha Damon stood beside the car. He yanked Dad out like he was nothing but a rag doll, and then, in a flash of teeth and claws, he tore him apart.

-Ferals- Feral is a term used in this book for half-human-half-animal living beings. They don’t seek royal blood for it gives them no powers at all. It is up to them, if they want to work for the vampires or werewolves or if they want to be protectors of the Royal blood. They are not as powerful as the others, however, if taken under the wings of royal blood they do become useful tools and become more powerful.

When we weren't training, she made us spend all our time in the library. “Is it wrong to read those books?” I asked. “No. It's never wrong to read, sister.” She cupped my cheeks softly. “But the power in reading is knowing which information you can weaponize and which one to ignore. The lies in books are just as much as the truth.” I nodded, already committing her words to memory. She sighed and drew closer to me. “Remember this, Eloise. No one out there is your friend. They're all enemies waiting to strike you the minute you let your guard down. Use every weapon at your disposal to destroy your enemies before they destroy you. Always make the first move.”

KAINE’S POV It takes fifty seconds for my protection mark to appear. And it's only by thirty-nine, she finally stops resisting. *Great Hel. She’s too stubb—* The sudden, sharp pressure of her teeth sinking into my lip cuts my thoughts short. She actually drew blood. I lean back a little. Most prey would freeze when cornered. They would not bide their time, waiting for an opening to retaliate. They would not try to fight back. “How dare you? Let go of me, you beast!” she spits, her blue eyes blazing at me.
