I wandered toward the fiction section, running my fingers along a row of spines, pulling one out here and there to read the back cover. “What’s this one?” Kade asked, picking up a battered paperback I’d set aside. “Oh, that one’s really good,” I said, my voice picking up speed the way it always did when I talked about books. “It’s about this girl who discovers she’s part of this ancient bloodline nobody knew existed, and she has to figure out who she can trust while everyone around her is lying to her. It’s got this whole slow burn romance woven through it too, and the writing is just…”

He wipes his face with a spare hanky. Why can’t he find it? He pulled out his phone from his pocket. He searches about it then. There had to be something. But what’s he gonna search. Mystery girl? Demon? There must be an ancient name for her. Or there isn’t. He was exhausted already. He ruffled his head, if he didn’t get anything, Dixon would end up killing him. He strolled down his phone. Ancient mystery girl. History search. He hunkered down. Since he was tired of standing.

Most things are about detectives and all their boring stuff but something tells me to go through it because I might know a thing or two. I've opened almost all the books on the first shelf. Turns out detective books are not so bad. I also passed out my time by checking some of the murder novels on the shelve. One really caught my interest. Dying to call you by Elaine Viet. It's about a girl finding her sister's murderer and all that.

Another grab for the book and some food, then I crossed my legs and opened my reading books while I ate my sandwich heartily. "Are you reading that ham again?" I felt Wynn's gaze more than I saw him. "It can't be that interesting." But she could only say that because she didn't read anything but mindless teen magazines. "I am learning. Give it a try, it's good for your future. "

I could see a level of understanding cross the faces before me. “I was hidden away when my village was burned to the ground and sent out to the human world for protection. I only discovered my true identity a few days ago and yesterday I learned an even greater truth.” I had to stop once again to collect myself. I knew I had to show strength but the truth was I still hadn’t completely accepted everything I learned yesterday. It seemed that I was out of time. “All of you have heard the rumors and stories about the Midnight child. You have told your kids fairy tales and probably wondered if any of it had been true. It is.”

Walking over to the log, I pry open my bottle of beer using the sharp edge before taking a single swig, immediately I'm met with a burning, bitter taste on my tongue. "There," I breathe out. "Now it's fair ground. If I snitch on you guys, I'll also be snitching on myself." I shock myself with this new profound confidence that came from knowhere. They all look at each other, and it looked as if they were having a silent conversation with their eyes. Then the blonde boy sighs in defeat.

Jace simply answers. I stand up, placing my hands on the table gently. “I need a breather. I’ll be right back.” I walk aimlessly and find myself in front of the storage room I cleaned last Tuesday. What the heck?! Did my subconscious bring me here on a whim? My eyebrows furrow when the storage room suddenly opens and out comes a tall young man with black hair dressed in a dark blue onesie. His back is towards me and in his one hand, he carries a yearbook that seemed to be from twenty-five years ago while the other closes the door.

I think I need to find him… but if I do, how can I find him when I don’t know what he looks like? Will he come to my rescue? Will he end these mysteries?

It has never been my goal to impress my sister with anything I do. I scroll through the books in the library until I come to my favourite section, Mystery. I always love the thrill that comes with not knowing what's going to happen next. You can make it more interesting for yourself if you start to wonder what is happening and what will happen. I take a few glances through the books on the shelves and take a book that looks the most interesting out of all the books I saw. 'In the Woods' by Tana French.
