She turned gracefully, her fur rippling like silk, and led the way into the building.
“Vireya,” Xareth said coldly, “get me the Heartstone.”
A hush fell over the clearing.
Gasps echoed from the bear and the other animals, who had been going about their lives just moments before. Conversations stopped, wings stilled, even the trees seemed to recoil.
“What?” the white bear said, voice trembling. “That’s impossible."
I didn’t want to, but it didn’t matter. At his command, my body betrayed me. My wolf surged forward. I watched through her eyes, powerless, as she lunged at the bear.
