Looking up, she spotted a black bird flying in the direction of her home. The cawing echoed through the woods, piercing through the silence like a knife. Its sound was both eerie and comforting, as if the bird was guiding Miranda on her journey home. The cawing was not continuous, but intermittent, almost as if the bird was speaking in a language Miranda couldn't understand. Its voice was rough and hoarse, yet had a strange melody to it.

I squinted, trying to see at least something in the gloomy sky. -What else is that? - dumbfounded asked in the crowd. A dark silhouette, which had just separated from the forest, was rapidly approaching us. - Some kind of bird... I don't understand. -Owl! It has a short multicolored tail and a long orange beak that compliments its black eyes with brown circles on them.

Looking at the animals, Zephyra knew there at least were some deer, possum, coyote, and even skunks. Some even looked young, born a month or two ago at most. Bile rose in her throat, and her stomach flipped, landing with a sickening flop. Zephyra covered her nose and mouth again, wondering what could have done this. She took a few steps back from the pile of carcasses when she heard a sound coming from her right. Acting on pure instinct, Zephyra grabbed an arrow from her quiver, notched it, and drew it, ready to fire.

The blue petals rustled again before a fluffy head popped up. Veronica leaned in closer eyeing the creature curiously before it squawked and bit her nose. She flinched back holding her as the creature skipped out of the bluebells. Veronica rubbed her nose glaring at the bird as he hopped excitedly as if it were mocking her. She got a good look at him. The cere was royal blue, so it was obviously a male bird, and given its size it couldn't be a parrot so it must be a parakeet. The only thing she couldn't figure out is why he was playing around the bushes. Darrion led the both of them to a small stream where a bird monster was currently drinking from. The bird looked like an ostrich, but it was brown, bigger and seemed more powerful than an ostrich. Unlike ostrich that usually tuck their wings, this monster’s wings were opened to the side and it could be seen how long the pair of it was. But due to its long legs and big claws, none of the boys think this bird monster would use those wings to fly.

A pair of binoculars rested on his lap. Catching sight of her, he pressed a finger to his lips, and gestured for her to join him. "Look," he whispered, pointing to a pair of fairly large birds. Pretty, with bluish-gray heads, pearly-pink breasts and brown wings mottled with black, they pecked at the ground some distance away. "Do you know what they are?" "Pigeons?" she ventured.
