I dipped my fingers into the current and brought them to my nose. Blood. “Stop,” I said sharply. The three Alphas halted immediately. Kael turned, his obsidian eyes scanning the treeline. “What is it?” “The water. It’s tainted.” Zephyr knelt beside me, his silver eyes narrowing. He touched the water, then brought his fingers to his lips. He tasted it, then spat, his expression darkening. “It’s fresh. Less than an hour old. Something bled upstream. A lot of something.”

Like saying it out loud is its own kind of relief. "Don't talk," I say. I put my hands on him. The Moonblood knows what to do. I don't have to direct it or manage it or be afraid of it. It moves through me the way it has been waiting to move — not forced, not pushed, simply allowed. It finds the powder's trace in his blood the way light finds the edges of things in a dark room. Not by force. By nature. By the simple fact that where this kind of light goes, the things that hide in darkness cannot stay hidden.

Dunn’s expression turned more puzzled, and he lowered his voice even more. “That’s the strange part,” he admitted. “Medically, he shouldn’t have survived what happened to him. However, in his case, we extracted far less water than we would have expected for someone who had been submerged for so long. His lungs aren’t as damaged. It's almost as if something stopped the water from fully entering his lungs."

At first the water poured out clear, steaming gently but then the smell hit her. Metallic and thick. Ivy frowned as she watched the water darkened. Swirling violently as red bled through it. Her heart skipped a beat as blood spilled from the showerhead as well. Spattering against the white tiles. “What the hell!!" She screamed. As the water began pooling at her feet. " No,” she breathed, reaching for the handle of the tap to turn it off but it wouldn't budge. "No, no, no…" she backed away.

I had never felt this angry before in my life. I felt a stray tear roll down my cheek as I silently watched the reflection of the moon in the water in front of me. My dress glowed slightly as the moonlight kissed it softly. I was about to put my hand in the water, then my eyes fell on my finger, or more like on the tiny drop of blood coming out of the skin. The drop of blood fell into the water. It caused a small ripple, then disappeared in the water. But the spot where my blood drop fell became slightly darker.

Without thinking, I stripped off my clothes and stumbled into the shower. "Easy, Ariel," Evana called after me. I barely heard her. A second later, hot water cascaded over my body. I closed my eyes and breathed as the heat loosened my muscles and steam filled my lungs. My trembling eased. For one precious moment, everything was quiet. Then I looked down. The water pooling around my feet had turned red. My breath caught. Blood. Crimson swirls spiraled toward the drain, making something inside me shatter. "No!"

I stepped on something wet. I froze. A cold shiver climbed my spine. “Hold on,” I whispered. Blinky groaned. “Oh my God, I said I'm not...” “Blinky,” I said urgently, “STOP.” He paused, irritated. “Okay WHAT is it now?” I turned on my phone flashlight. What I saw made my stomach twist painfully. Blood. Fresh. A pool of it. “Blinky,” I choked out, “it’s blood. Fresh blood.” His face drained instantly.

The thick, dark primordial blood of a century-old vampire welled from the deep cut. "Drink, Brynn," Riheirk commanded, his voice raw and desperate as he pressed his bleeding wrist firmly against her lips. "Drink from me. Let my blood purge the poison. Accept it, sweetheart, please." Brynn’s jade eyes flickered. Driven by her own fading strength and the desperate, triumphant internal screaming of Solar, her jaw parted. She bit down lightly on his wrist, her lips drawing the heavy, white-hot furnace of his primordial blood into her system.

She tried to concentrate enough to will the sky to return to its previous state, but to her astonishment, it only darkened even further. "What's going on?" Adea muttered to herself. She soon realized the water felt thicker than before. She turned her head over to look at the water. It was almost too dark to see clearly, but the substance in which she lied had become thick and dark in color like maroon. At first, Adea thought it was merely reflecting the obscure light of the heavens above her, but it did not take long to realize the horrifying truth: the water had turned to blood.
