Svanna asked after waiting a long time for Nightroe to make up his mind. “Will you really let me touch you if I tell you the results?” The man’s deep voice sounded heavy with a tone of certainty. Svanna nodded quickly. She caught a glimpse of Nightroe’s Adam’s apple bobbing up and down. Before he finally spoke, “The doctor said I often skip sleep, and that causes me to constantly have headaches. Maybe I’ll recover gradually if I can manage my sleep schedule properly.” Is that all? Really? Svanna’s first reaction was silence; she tried to accept Nightroe’s words as absolute truth, even though her instincts seemed to reject them.

“How is that your business?” Sleep was right there, right in my fucking face and just when I was about to grab onto it, he disrupts me. “Your wellbeing is my business, Xavier. You pay me well enough to worry about you.” “My mental well-being is your business, Doctor. Or do you now specialize in physical health as well? Want to give me a massage so I can sleep better?” I know my tone is harsh, but this office, this man, these sessions just somehow manage to bring out the worst in me.

His arm wrapped around me and I rested my head on his chest. "You're freezing," he said pulling me in tighter. "I want to sleep. You'll stay, won't you?" I asked. "Of course," he replied. "Promise me I won't wake up and you'll be gone," I added looking up into his eyes. "I promise." I nodded and laid my head back down. It was ages before I could actually sleep. With so many thoughts and memories, it's hard for your mind to slip into rest. The Doctor had prescribed me some sleeping pills but I wasn't allowed to take them until my strength had improved. So I just lay there until my dreadful thoughts became dreadful nightmares.

I wake up to pee more than five times, the doctor says I'm suffering from sleep apnea, says the reason why I blank out sometimes is because I forget what to say and so it takes time for my brain and body to be back to normal, and maybe I might be sleeping while my eyes were wide open. Foolish doctors and the nonsense drugs they give me. They would say, open your mouth, watch you swallow the drug and then let you leave. That silly lady of a nurse would pat my back after I take my drugs and eat the food given to me. I hate it here, but they wouldn't let me leave, they wouldn't let us leave.

I guess she’s on night duty while Doc sleeps. There’s no one else there, and the lights have been set to low, so the only illuminations of any brightness come from the medic at her workspace. The rest is dim, even where Colton sits, and I can barely make out the low hum of his voice as he talks to her. I click open the door as quietly as I can and move in quickly, and silently,

Dr Ashford yawned while answering Aaron’s call. “Doctor, I slept for six days and night continuously,” Aaron spoke up in a single breath. Dr Ashford’s sleep ran out of the city. He coughed hard to digest things. Aaron was treated by many doctors but his insomnia wasn't cured by any medicine. It was unbelievable for Dr Ashford. He almost screamed in reply, “What? How?”

“I didn’t know that until last night.” I close my eyes. We sit there on the library floor until my tea would have gone cold if I’d made any, until the house settles into its deepest quiet, until I’m not sure how much time has passed and don’t particularly need to know. His shoulder is warm against mine where we’ve drifted close enough to touch without either of us addressing it. Eventually I say, “You should sleep.” “You should have slept three hours ago.” “I’m a doctor. I function on no sleep.”

I grumble holding my heavy head. The female doctor smiles tentatively. "You passed out due to fatigue." "What!" "When was the last time you had eight hours sleep?" I chuckle. "We are adults. Who sleeps for eight hours straight?" "Healthy adults." I don't like this doctor's tone and that fake smile on her face. "So," the doctor looks at CJ coyly. "The patient needs a lot of rest and plenty of sleep and lots of water." Why is she using a different tone with CJ? A sweeter sexual tone?
