It would be nice to have a friend I can trust around me. I dialed the last number Nathan had dialed and I called Lisa back into my office. She walked in with a coffee mug and some snacks, smiling brightly at me. She said it was time for my 10:30 AM Break according to my schedule. I smiled back at her this time, accepting her peace offering. After a productive board meeting I actually that it's time for a short break. I decided to grab the coffee and snacks, chat with some of the team members, or simply take a moment to collect your thoughts and prepare for the upcoming staff meeting.

We were awful, but it was so good. There was this guy at the bar, sunglasses inside, like he was somebody, and every time we looked over, we just lost it—like, actual tears, trying not to snort-laugh margarita up my nose. Jasmine started in on her boss, who apparently had a full-on breakdown over a missing stapler, like, shouting, sweating, losing his grip on reality, and I nearly choked, had to grab a napkin because I was about to spit tequila everywhere. It was stupid and messy, and I swear my stomach hurt from laughing, but it felt like breathing again, you know?

I nodded in response as I cleared my throat and glanced at him. “That's good! You know, it's not a sin to take a break after a while. You're all taking things seriously so that you don't get to know the feels of a break,” I tried to joke around and I was glad he took it lightly by letting out a chuckle. I mindlessly stared at his face, particularly his lips. It was widely stretched for a gentle smile. “I beg to disagree, Avareign. Break means taking the least time to be more productive than usual,” a crease formed on my forehead as I looked into his eyes.

I sighed deeply but my face lit up immediately when my phone screen lit up. FROM THE LOML: I have a fifteen minute break. Are you busy now? I instantly sent a reply to him. TO THE LOML: No, I am free. Have you eaten? He told me he wasn't able to have breakfast because be rushed out of the house today. FROM THE LOML: No, I haven't. I panicked and hastily typed a reply. TO THE LOML: What? You haven't eaten? Do you know what the time is? Why won't you go get food with your fifteen minute break?

I said. I had tried to be patient and I was at my wits end. Besides, patience had never really been my forte. “Don’t be like that with me” she mumbled and I sighed “you know what? We need a break”; I said. Suddenly, surprising even myself. She arched a brow at me in disbelief “do you even take breaks?” she asked and gave her a dead panned look “ha-ha fucking hilarious” I said sarcastically and she chuckled “come on you have to admit it was a little funny” she said and I couldn’t stop the soft smile that crept to my lips “I’m not admitting shit” I said lightheartedly.

But instead, I got this version of him. Quieter. More patient. Still infuriating, but in a way I didn’t entirely hate. And then, of course, I had to go and ruin everything by laughing at his damn joke. It happened in the break room of all places.
