(FLASHBACK ) I heard the shattering of the window and my heart started pounding like a bass drum in my chest. Fear and panic coursed through my veins as I realized that someone had broken into our home. I quickly picked up the phone and dialed Cole, praying that he would answer. "Cole, oh my God, someone broke into the house!" I exclaimed, trying to keep my voice low as I hurriedly made my way through the dark halls, trying to find a place to hide.

"Jane, are you hurt?" "How are you in my house?" "The door was unlocked." "That doesn't give you the right to come in!" "Jane, you almost fell down the stairs." "I know I almost fell down the stairs! I snapped, unable to keep the tremble out of my voice as the edge of panic hit me. “Who are you, little girl?” he shot back. Asshole. This guy was such an asshole. “Why the hell did you break into my brother’s apartment, you creep?!” I stomped my foot in frustration, though I knew yelling wouldn’t solve anything. “Break in?” He furrowed his brows, clearly confused. “What are you even talking about?” God, I was the one who should be confused right now! “You broke into my brother’s apartment and violated the owner’s privacy! Are you completely insane?”

I couldn’t hold back the sharpness in my voice. “Someone broke into our room.” I dropped the words like stones. “They tore everything apart, stole our electronics, and left it in complete shambles. The door wasn’t forced—I used my keycard to get in, and I was the only one with that key.” My voice rose, rattling across the polished floors. Kira’s growl resonated in my chest, and it was only by sheer will that I didn’t bare my teeth at him.

I swing again. CRASH. The glass fractures deeper. A chunk falls. Not enough. Sweat drips into my eyes, my fingers sting, but I raise the stone again. One more. BOOM. The doorknob gives in, falling out with a clatter. A gust of free air rushes in through the broken frame. I push the door open. Silence stretches behind me. I turn around to find Adrian staring at me like he’s seeing a ghost. “Are you..” he blinks, stunned, “are you a criminal? Because it looks like you’ve mastered the act of breaking into people’s houses.”
