Working on instinct alone, my legs spur into action. I leap up from my seat as he tries to swipe for me, and without comprehending my own actions, I’m backing away from this infuriated stranger. He rounds the table now in his foreign storminess, feet thudding heavily towards me, and with his hand – his unfamiliar hand, curled tight with alien veins straining against the skin – raised. The paper cranes take flight once more, filling my legs, then my feet and toes, and urge me forwards. The next thing I know, I’m bolting towards my front door; the imposter’s outraged voice following me out into the night.
