The paper curled the moment it kissed the flame. Scarlet didn’t hesitate. She pressed the notebook harder into the candlelight, watching as the edges blackened, the ink blistering and fading into nothing. The words she’d bled onto those pages...plans, filth, fear, secrets...warped and vanished in a hiss. Ronan was still struggling with his shirt, fabric caught over his head like a damn blindfold. She tossed the burning book into the fireplace. And screamed.

Zara stepped in gently, as if afraid to wake the ghosts of the room. Her hand moved along the edge of a dusty shelf, then across the spines of books—most untouched for years. She didn’t know what she was looking for. Maybe just a moment of escape. Then she saw it. Nestled beneath an old sketchpad, slightly curled from age, was a small black notebook. The leather was soft, almost fragile. A faint scrawl of ink on the cover read simply: Regan. Her fingers hovered over it for a beat. Then, carefully, she picked it up.

But when he looked up, hundreds of other books were lifting and floating from the shelves, their pages bleeding and whispering her name. “Camela. Camela. Camela.” Her head spun, and her chest rose and fell heavily. “They want me…” Vincent held her tightly against him, his flame blazing so bright enough it illuminated the shelves like daylight. “Then they’ll have to burn for it,” he said. He swung his arm through the air, sending fire in a blazing arc that struck the shelves. The books shrieked, blood hissed, and their pages curled black, turning ash. The page he had opened was burnt off. “This is the second book with Odette that has a page missing just when it's about to become about her!” he declared, the tone of his voice increasing in irritation. My heart dropped to my stomach once more as I quickly flipped through the pages of the book in my hands. But just as Cassian had observed, the pages of the book with me were also burnt off at the page that was supposed to be about Odette… “No… No…” I mumbled as I quickly started flipping through the rest of the books.

Some even had tiny, hand-drawn doodles. Regina’s fingers ran over the ink, her chest tightening. Who did this? These books weren’t just sitting here for decoration. Someone had read them. Someone had loved them. And it wasn’t Damien. As Regina flipped through the book, something slipped from between the pages and fluttered to the floor. A handmade bookmark. She leaned down to pick it up, but just as she did, something else caught her eye that was a glint of silver peeking from beneath Damien’s desk.

He seldom handed her the books they read because he wanted to have an excuse to stay with his mother, but as she skimmed the new chapter, she realized Owen wanted her to read the sex scenes out loud. “This is a dirty trick,” Regina sneered at Owen, and he grinned mischievously. “I don’t remember those words being part of that chapter.” “I’m not talking about the chapter, and you know it.” “What are you talking about, dear?” Mrs. Bennet asked. “I think it’s time we went outside for our walk,” Regina said after she closed the book. “Oh,” Mrs. Bennet’s face fell. “I wanted to hear what happened. It was getting to the good part.”

I demanded, my voice sharp as a blade. “Because you’re crazy!” Ernie spat, though his voice shook. “Digging into things that should’ve stayed buried!” I slammed him lightly back against the fence, just enough to rattle it. “Tell me about the burned body. Who brought it in?” His jaw worked as though he wanted to keep lying, but Regina stepped closer, her voice low and deadly calm. “If you don’t answer, I swear you’ll regret it. I’ve lived through worse than this. Don’t test me.”

She realizes now, it might be because Mattel did not know what kinds of books Regina liked - that he’d been considerate enough to think of this, and then to include a wide variety of genres. Regina picks one of the books up, peering closely at the binding, the page edges and even going as far as to flick through the book carefully, looking for signs of wear. All the books are in impeccable condition, but upon closer inspection, he can see that all of the books have, in fact, been read at least once; and that some even show subtle signs of having been read several times, such as a slightly worn crease in the spine.
