The call display flickered, the seconds ticker frozen mid-count, and then the screen went dark, the call ended before I'd said goodbye, before I'd said anything at all.
I stared at it, my pulse hammering.
“No, no, no—” I hit redial. The call didn't even ring. It went straight to a flat, mechanical voice telling me the number was unreachable. I tried again. Same result. I tried a third time, my thumb trembling against the screen, and got nothing but silence pretending to be a connection.
Blocked. It had to be blocked. Nobody's signal died that cleanly, that instantly, in the middle of a sentence.
