I could hear her heartbeat pounding — not just with dread, but with hope. I glanced at everyone present before my voice rang out, clear and strong. “Everyone here will bear me witness. As Lycan King, I swear to fight fair. If I win, I take Danika and retain my title as Lycan King. And if I lose, everything will be handed over to Darius. You can all now choose sides.” They couldn’t even wait for my words to settle before chatter erupted in the clearing. “The Lycan King is shameless! Why would he leave his own pack to come to an opponent’s pack just to get back his mate?”

My lips parted, but nothing came out. I looked at the paper again. I flipped to the last page. There were boxes waiting for initials. A full signature line. A stamped seal beside it. All official. All neat. But my name wasn’t there yet. Only his. In full. Lucien Draven. The Lycan King. I forced myself to speak. “What’s the need?” I asked, soft, calm as I could manage. “You already took me from my pack. I didn’t get to choose. You did that. So… why this?”

Those dark eyes scanned the room as he looked at the females gathered around him, shaking in fear. Lycan King Alaric scoffed at them, “Weaklings,” he said, his voice voice sending chills, “We all know why you are gathered here. You volunteered or were forced, others are here to see me choose again another bride who would probably end up dead. So…I am just going to randomly choose as I am too lazy to start knowing all your names.”

“What? I mean, obviously, how can I go against you, my king?” “So you remember I am your king?” Rowan’s voice boomed through the room, causing everyone to wince. “You remember I rule over you, not because I was appointed, but because I was chosen by the goddess. The last of the Lycans.” Vince dropped to his knees and bowed. “I’m sorry. Please forgive me.” Vince was playing his part well, but I noticed he was darting his eyes to the council, and I watched their reaction. One was shaking his head.

The elders had expected this announcement at long last and it seemed most of them realized it would take a queen to survive. “Being Lycan King, I will decide my mate and being elders it’s your duty to give her respect no matter who she is.” One of the oldies came out and he was an old man having grey hairs with sharp eyes. “Yes, Your Majesty, we will obey you. But tell us, whom did you have chosen as a life partner?” I breathed deeply before I spoke the words that would shatter the room. "Lyra." A heavy silence fell. Then, as if someone had just lit a fire in the room, whispers and gasps started erupting.

I asked and faced the elder, emphasizing my words. “Why are you the one to be chosen if you are also single?” I questioned, and the bold man spoke again. “He is single, but it has to be after two years, and if he is still single, he will also be dethroned!” The man said, and I saw how stupid the logic was. “Okay, that makes sense!” I said, and Reed immediately interrupted. “And I already have a woman who catches my eye, brother. With me as the Lycan king, she will be my queen!” he said, and I turned to him.

“They always chose him as king instead of giving me a chance to prove how better I was of him.” “How is that supposed to be my business?” I whispered to myself again, the words barely leaving my lips before I forced the thought away. There was no point letting him see what was going on inside my head. So instead, I kept quiet and continued listening. But one word he had said kept ringing over and over again in my mind. Theoreon was cursed… and yet the people still chose him as their king. Why? The lycans valued strength even more than wolves did. Their entire hierarchy was built upon it. Power decided everything. Dominance decided everything.

The room went quiet again, the murmurs died down as they sighed in relief, as if they were saved already.

No one spoke. Kai tried to pull away but Darius's grip was too strong. "Your Majesty, please think about this. People will talk. They will say the great Lycan King claimed a male freak who can bear children. You will lose respect." Darius gave a short, dangerous laugh. "Let them talk. I will remove the tongue of anyone who speaks against my mate. The moon has chosen. I will not refuse her gift." Marcus stepped forward again, eyes shining with hope. "Does this mean our pack has earned your favor, Your Majesty? We brought him to you."
