The spirit beast ran to the border before stopping, but all we could see were the three beastmen. "You vile beasts, where have you taken Vee?" Mother angrily scolded them, forgetting that she was merely the ruler of a small kingdom. Sure enough, the three beastmen burst into laughter upon hearing that. Felix casually tugged on a rope beside him. "Ha! Like mother, like daughter—so defiant." Sharp wails came from the cliff's edge. "Mother, no! Don't anger them or I'll die! They're all insane!" Mother was gripping my hand tightly, and when she discovered Victoria hanging from the cliff wall by a thin rope, her nails dug into my flesh.

My tongue flicked out, tasting fear, metal, sweat. I smiled wider. The ceiling welcomed me. I moved upward without effort, claws gripping silently as I blended into the shadows, becoming part of the dark itself. Below, the front door creaked open. Footsteps. Careful. Cautious. Too slow. The first man crossed the threshold. I struck. My tongue snapped forward, fast and precise, sinking into him before he could draw a breath. His body locked instantly, eyes wide with terror as paralysis took hold. He hit the floor without a sound.
