The shift rushed through me instantly, and just then, the first beast reached me. Its arm swung downward with enough force to shatter stone. I dropped beneath it and the claws missed my head by what felt like the width of a breath. Then the second beast arrived. It joined the show passionately but this wasn’t a party so I didn’t wait for a hug. I twisted violently to the side as another set of claws slashed through empty air where my face had been moments earlier. Sand exploded around me. My pulse hammered against my ribs. The beasts collided again. For a moment they shoved each other while growling furiously, and I used the opportunity to stumble backward across the sands.

“But I can’t read the title. It’s too far.” The shadow-spiders came back, scaling the glowing threads like ladders. They started eating the words in old chapters. When they devoured Chapter 1: The Beginning, Maya got dizzy. “They’re eating our past!” Julian yelled. “If they finish those chapters, we’ll disappear before the end!” The Dangerous Climb “We have to climb,” Maya said. She eyed the skinny thread for Chapter 61, as narrow as a tightrope. “Maya, you’re human in this world,” Julian said, worried. He grabbed her shoulder. “If you fall from here, there’s no ‘Undo’ button. You’ll die.”

Claws scraped deep gouges into the stone as I launched forward with a thunderous roar that shook the walls. Cassian shifted too, melting into swirling shadows that twisted around his form like living smoke. He darted straight toward Cassandra, eyes locked greedily on the child. I slammed into him mid-leap with my full weight. We crashed sideways into a heavy pillar, stone cracking under the impact. His shadow tendrils whipped across my muzzle and burned like acid where they struck.

What the hell is happening here? “What the fuck?” I say. Is this some kind of prank that Victor’s decided to pull? I look hard at what’s being portrayed, and it’s the image of a beast with large horns.
