Troy looked at her hands. "Yes," he said carefully. "I am not responding to it," she said. "It is responding to me." She opened her fingers again. The warmth moved outward through her palms and the tips of her fingers and she felt it reach the cold night air and change the temperature in the space immediately around her hands in a way she could feel but not explain. She looked up at Troy. He was watching her hands with an expression that was focused and careful and something else underneath both that she could not fully name.

The words did something even when the situation didn't immediately justify them. I said it again. "You're okay." My hands were warm. Warmer than they should have been, given the cold and the bleeding, which usually made things colder. The warmth was coming from inside rather than outside, the specific quality of it, like something moving through the skin rather than sitting on top of it. I looked at my hands.

The sight was so enchanting, that I could leave paradise for it. I know I am being pulled towards her and I am not able to do anything no matter how hard I try. Shifting a little towards her I took her hands in mine. Her hands were ice cold so I rubbed her hands in between my palms to provide my heat. Her hands are so small in comparison to mine that my hands fully covered hers.
