I traced my fingers along their worn spines, pulling out the most recently dated volume. Settling back at my desk, I carefully opened the old leather journal. The handwriting within was neat and precise at first, filled with medical entries and patient notes. But as I neared the back, the penmanship grew frantic, almost hurried, as if the writer had been racing against time. Each page was filled with crossed-out words, smudged ink, and hastily added notations, as if the doctor’s thoughts had become too chaotic to organize. One word caught my attention: Deceased.

He tilted it toward the light entering through the window. Faint indentations appeared. Not drawings. Writing. Someone had written on the page above and torn it away. Alex reached into his pocket. "What are you looking for?" Alison asked. "A pencil." She handed him one. Instead of writing... Alex gently shaded across the page. Slowly... Letters emerged. Bethwel leaned closer. "Indented writing." Alex continued shading until the message became readable. It wasn't complete. Only three words. ...bridge... ...red truck... ...dog...
