I say to the unmoving animal, it's eyes open and lazer focused on us with an intensity that made me freeze and my dog shuffle on his feet. Crimson were it's eyes, so blood red that I couldn't differentiate between beautiful and dangerous. The look was fleeting, his lids fluttered shut again, but it left my skin tingling as if I'd touched an electric wire.

That was the only reason I knew it was Nyra. Because everything else in her form looked like the creature that had carried her. Only… better. Higher. Like the Outlands had birthed monsters, but Nyra had become their nightmare.

She cut her palm, heart pounding. A single drop of blood fell onto the center of the ash crown. The moment the blood landed, the crown shattered into motes of ember. They drifted like dying sparks, then vanished. The molten fissure pulsed once, then began to seal itself, crusting over in glowing veins of cooled obsidian and ash.

Azrael’s eyes were pure murder, horns pulsing like hearts. I smiled again, fangs glinting. “Sorry. Clumsy me. Still recovering.” Nyxara exhaled hard through her teeth, frustration etched in every line. “That’s it. I’m going to scout ahead. Alone. You two stay here and… try not to kill each other. We need all hands for tonight.” She grabbed her twin blades from the pack—curved, wicked things etched with runes that hummed faintly—and strode off into the blinding morning light, tail flicking in annoyance.

“And I see you brought my shadow back. You screamed so beautifully the last time, Hollowborn.” Nyxara stepped forward. Calm. Unyielding. Her eyes didn’t search his form— They cut straight through it. “Erik.” Her voice was steady, laced with fire and memory. “Still clawing at crowns you’ll never wear.” The creature froze—just for a breath— before the flames in its hollow chest guttered and flared. “You left me in the dark, little crown of fire.”
