It was the same wolf that stopped Karl. The wolf king. The alpha. It was my first time seeing him in human form, but even from a distance, the difference was obvious. He wasn’t just another wolf. He was the one who couldn't be challenged. His gaze moved slowly and deliberately across the room. The other wolves dared not meet his eyes. His gaze finally landed on me. “I believe you’re a Royal White Wolf. A bloodline thought extinct for two hundred years.” The words made no sense. “That’s impossible. I’m just—” “You’re not ‘just’ anything,” Kael interrupted. “Royal Wolves are the most powerful wolves in existence. They can command other wolves, they’re immune to magic, and they possess strength that rivals Lycan Kings.” “But I can’t do any of that,” I protested. “Because the curse is suppressing it,” Dr. Chen explained. “Everything you should be—strong, powerful, commanding—the curse has locked away. “You will.” My skin tingled violently, a shiver crawling down my spine. The Dark King stepped in front of me, blocking my view. “Do not speak to her.” His voice was low, dangerous, shaking with something I had never heard before from him. The giant wolf growled, a sound so deep it made the entire palace tremble. “Move.” The Dark King’s jaw tightened. His eyes turned pitch black. “She belongs to the curse.” “She belongs to no curse,” the wolf said. “She belongs to herself.”

* Zara's wolf spoke up again. She carefully crawled backward, putting herself out of the king's line of sight. "You never even tried to find a cure," Kael said. "A king who only ever resorts to violence is just an idiot who doesn't know how to rule." He spat the words, his eyes shifting to that tainted yellow glow. The curse was beginning to manifest. "Your poison has lasted generations. The only cure is death. You're just naive." The king's eyes bulged, his voice trembling with rage. "It ends with you."

Justine mirrored her father perfectly, but Justin looked like a shadow born of sickness. I forced him back into human form.
