Danny lowers his eyes on his plate while I hold my cup up to shield my face. With a whisper, I get Arawn’s attention, and I shake my head. “Be nice. Please.” But he just scoffs, emptying his cup of coffee. “I have to make a phone call. Hurry up, Dan.” “Aam alrdy hwrrng.” Danny munches, looking like an abandoned puppy dog. Leaning forward, I get him to halt while looking at me. “Don’t be sad. We can do something fun next time.” He nods repeatedly, smiling happily, and I sit back up straight.

Phantom’s eyes remain wide, unmoving. “Last chance,” Canum snarls, dropping the false fatherly tone. “I’ll count to three before I remove your head—and then hers.” I raise my hand, desperate, but Bethany grips it, nails digging into my skin. “Make another move, and I’ll burn Phantom to ash before Canum finishes. Play nice. Let the men handle their own.” Paralysis grips me. No matter what I do, Phantom dies. “Don’t! You can have the crown. Please, just stop, Canum! Stop hurting him—please.”

I say, conscious of the need to get to know any regulars, at least by name. As I set the stout in front of the guy with the star on his face, he takes my hand in both of his and kisses it, somehow NOT making it weird. “Lovely to meet you, Billie. I’m the Phantom, but you can call me Will if you must,” he says, and indicating the bored one on the end, “that’s Dominic. I NEED to know who he is, and something tells me I won’t discover much if I approach him as Phantom Reaper. I don’t really even know who I actually am, to be honest.
