He seemed to be closest to Layla as he explained Layla’s plans in detail. The more Eva listened, the more she felt like she could not breathe. David’s words about a boy and a girl drifted back into my thoughts. What if he was right? But I didn’t feel anything like that yet. Time would tell. The calm shattered suddenly when Arthur shot to his feet. He inhaled sharply, his gaze turning dark and hostile. “What is it, Arthur?” “Damn it,” he muttered, crossing to the wardrobe where a large safe was hidden. When he pulled out a gun, my stomach dropped.

She could easily hide behind him. “Do you remember Damien?” Ada said referring to the figure emerging from the forest. The guy only wore black pants and for some reason the image of Michelangelo’s David popped into Arthur’s head looking at his torso. White, hard and muscular. Arthur decided that he wanted to look like that too.

Boom boom boom boom! The loud noises in the sky came one after another. The battle was drawing to a close. David's body was also constantly tense. Arthur was still at a disadvantage now. I cheered as Jolly jesters started to dance in a funeral. For a moment, she couldn’t tell if she had truly woken or stepped into another nightmare. Arthur sat across the room, still dressed in yesterday’s shirt and slacks, staring into a flickering candle. Like he already believed this would work, and hope had already wrapped itself around him and refused to let go. I nodded and stood, falling into step beside him. But inside me, everything was trembling. Because while he spoke like this was the answer, I couldn’t stop the doubts pressing against my ribs. The story he found… it was beautiful. Poetic, even. But it didn’t speak about ghosts. It didn’t talk about what it meant to be stuck between life and death.

The realization somehow made me respect him even more. Because he had carried temptation for decades. And never surrendered to it. The sun dipped lower. Shadows stretched across the garden.
