I have to count a few times to get my bearings back and when I do, everything hits me with so much intensity it almost knocks me off my chair. I’m hearing everything in too much detail, like a scientist looking through a magnifying glass. I hear everything, even the sound of someone scraping the floor at a farther distance. The violent thudding of my heart rivals that of a tidal wave. I hear my heartbeat, too loud in my ears it is like a drum is being directly beside it.

“Yes, but I’m not saying anything until you see!” Clara puts more jelly on me, then rubs it around with the probe. It doesn’t take long before we hear a whoosh, whoosh, sound coming out of the speakers. “Alright Alpha, here is baby.” She stops moving the probe and points to the screen. “Why does it only sound like there’s one heart beat?” I ask Clara, and Ash’s face goes pale. In theory they whoosh should be almost continuous, overlapping starts and stops, since there’s more than one. Clara smiles.

Ferrera put down the test report and pushed his glasses up on his nose. "Daisy has congenital heart defects. She has pulmonary valve stenosis, which obstructs the blood flow from the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery. This causes an increase in pressure during the right ventricle's contraction, leading to compensatory hypertrophy and eventually dilatation of the right ventricle, often resulting in heart failure." So I’m not dead after all. Then footsteps. It echoed like it was coming from miles away and each distant sound of it as it hit the closed in put fear in my heart. My heart! I could finally feel it and it was beating hard against my chest. I was starting to feel. Even if every other part of me still feels numb. The footsteps twinned. Another person? Why do they sound so far? The footsteps sounded like they were being carried by the tides of waves and winds right into my ear.

The kind where the absence of motion is louder than any sound. My wolf makes a sound. Not the fracture from the coffee shop window. Something deeper. Drugs and controlled monitoring can help you recover with time.” Camila nodded slowly. Her mind was barely picking up his words but she was just trying to follow through.

Lina’s POV As he walked farther away from me, he continued fading, until I lost sight of him. Not literally because I could still see the outline of his back disappearing into the distance, tall and composed like he hadn’t just ripped my chest open. But everything around me blurred slowly after that. The sounds of children laughing. The evening breeze. The rustling leaves above us. All of it became distant. I could only hear my heartbeat. Loud. Painfully loud. It echoed inside my ears like something breaking apart over and over again. My chest hurt so badly I almost pressed my hand against it to make sure my heart was still there.

Greg sat on the sofa sweating while the fan was on and the room well ventilated. "Baby what's the matter" Samantha asked as she walked into the sitting room.
