The creature's amber eyes seemed to soften, and it lowered its head, gently nudging her shoulder. Cathy reached out, her hand trembling slightly as she placed it on the dragon's snout. The warmth of its scales beneath her palm grounded her, chasing away the loneliness that had threatened to consume her. ‘Warm. Safe. Not alone.’
"Thank you," she murmured, "for coming back."
The dragon shifted, and Cathy noticed it had placed something beside her—a rusted jar filled with an ominous dark red liquid. Her relief quickly gave way to suspicion as she eyed the container. ‘Blood. That's definitely blood.’
