A deep breath escaped my lips and I took the paper close to the flame and held it there, inches away from the bright light. I had read it, now it was time to throw it out, but… The flame ignited a tiny bit corner and the embers glowed orange but were soon smothered to a cold grey. I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t burn the paper in the flame. I didn’t know why but I just couldn’t. I pulled my hand back and looked at the paper, my eyes catching ‘Mr. Jacob West’ and ‘dominant’ in the same line. “...if it’s truly what you want, you know where to find me…”

Either way, I would be smart. I left the library and walked down the hall to the sitting room where the five elementals would keep to themselves. I needed to talk with them about this fire elemental, so I had a plan by the time we heard back from the agents at the coven and the pack down south. I walked into the sitting room to find the leader of the elementals, Erebus, sitting at a table with his raven, Mischief, while reading a book. He was an elemental that controlled shadows, but he wasn’t very powerful. He would just consume light around you and make you fight in the dark. He was handy when we needed to block out the sun though.

“Your present.” A creeping smile stole over Evelyn’s face as she reached for it. Tugging the ribbon free, she turned the package over, opening the paper to find a book. “Field Engineering,” she read, opening the small hardcover and skimming the table of contents, then gasped with a beaming smile. “It’s about streamliners! This is wonderful! Thank you!”
