I inquired, hesitantly, of Levine. Levine ignored my question and returned his focus to Edward. "It's okay, you can speak freely in front of her," he said. Edward appeared uncomfortable, as if unsure if he should express his concerns in my company. But Levine's persistence forced him to back down. "It's confidential," Edward remarked solemnly. "No one is a stranger here," Levine responded quietly. "Something is wrong with Xavier," Edward eventually said, dropping his voice. "He isn't acting like himself." Levine shrugged casually. "He's always been a psychopath, obstinate, and the devil. Don't tell me he's been replaced by some doppelganger," he joked.

"I... I can't—" "Stop playing a victim, okay?" Oliver cut in before she could finish, smiling in a way that gave her no room to argue further. "You owe me, remember? And tonight, you will pay me back." He snapped his eyes teasingly at her, the corner of his mouth tugging upward, entirely unbothered by the panic written plainly across her face, as though her fear amused him more than it moved him to mercy. "Son." Came Edward's sudden voice as he crossed the last few steps toward them, his arms already opening slightly in greeting. "About time you came home."

It felt as though the entire world had gotten just a little bit brighter. However, there was a young man standing next to her. It was Stanley, one of the potential candidates for Ophelia's future boyfriend. Stanley smiled kindly as he gave Edward a polite nod. When Edward noticed Stanley standing there, the warmth in his eyes was instantly replaced by a layer of ice. A smile still adorned his lips, but it no longer seemed as pleasant but rather faintly chilly. He remembered hearing Ophelia mention this man frequently when he was still abroad. Stanley was a genius financial major, a senior that she looked up to.

His head was pounding with worry and the remote possibility that everything Alexander was telling him was true. Oh God. By the end of it all, both of them were hunched over in their chairs with their faces buried in their hands. After a long pause. Oliver was the one who broke the silence. He lifted his head up and spoke. “From what you’ve told me, it sounds entirely plausible that Edward’s case is intertwined with yours. Granted, there is still a lot of fact-checking that needs to happen but it definitely something that needs to be looked into.”

“I’m unarmed.” Olivia shook her head, suddenly overwhelmed by a whirlwind of emotions. How had he entered her apartment in the first place? What did he want? And most importantly, who was he? He couldn’t be saying the truth about being unarmed, could he? As if reading her mind, he spoke up, “I’m Edward. Please, lower the gun.” He gestured with one hand lowered almost to the ground.
