A black feather stretched across my shoulder blade. For a moment I just stared at it. A tattoo? No. That wasn’t possible. My hands shook slightly as I grabbed the hem of my shirt and pulled it over my head. Then I turned fully toward the mirror. My breath left me in a soft gasp. My entire back was covered in them. Black wings. Not real wings. But something that looked almost as if they could be. Every feather was etched perfectly across my skin, layered and detailed in a way that made them look alive. The dark feathers shimmered faintly with streaks of iridescent blue that caught the morning light.

I stared at the tattoo covering his entire back. It was a dark angel with black wings, and a female angel with brilliant white wings enveloped the dark angel in a gesture of comfort. Around them, deep red and black roses were intertwined. It was like it was telling a story to bridge the chasm between light and darkness. My eyes were glued to the way he moved his body. The muscles in his back bunched together, and his biceps jerked when he pulled his hand back to rub his neck. He cracked it side to side.

I chuck on my black and green trainers and put on a bit of mascara. I look myself over in the mirror and twirl around. The large phoenix tattoo sitting on my back full on display when I pull my hair up into a bun. The phoenix is made up with whisks of black, brown, red, orange and yellow, like she just flew out of the flames. Her wings span across my shoulder blades and her head looks down to her tail that spreads down my spine and across my lower back. I got the tattoo a week after my nineteenth birthday, the damn thing cost me a small fortune. Looking back on it though my bird is worth every euro I spent on it. The intense colors saturated perfectly and the detail is outstanding.

It was beautiful and so captivatingly dangerous. He shrugged the shirt off his shoulders, and my breath caught. There was another tattoo high on his chest, near his collarbone. It looked like writing in a language I didn’t understand—maybe Russian—all sharp, elegant lines. But the most striking one was on his back. It wasn't fully visible; a large portion of it, running down his spine, was covered by what looked like… newer skin? It was smoother, shinier, as if it had been sealed over on purpose. His eyes roamed over my body quickly before focusing on my face. "Look at my back," I said, turning it toward him, my teeth chattering. His eyes got dark, like emeralds, and he licked his lips. I was mesmerized by the action. When he didn't say anything, I continued on. "There are tattoos of wings on my back." "I tore my gaze from his face and focused on the reflection of my back in the mirror. The wings were outlined in black and filled in along the edges.
