she mumbled, intrigued. Nueva flicked to the last page, and a nightmarish creature covered in red fur with large canine fangs stared at her dead-on with its vile green orbs. She instinctively closed the book; her chest rose in short ragged breaths. Nueva quickly tied the string back around the cover and placed the book neatly back in the waiting slot.

I murmured, gathering my things. At Row D, I ran my fingers across worn spines: Lycanthropy and Legends, Moon-bound, The Silver Curse. My pulse quickened as I pulled a heavy volume free. I whispered to myself, “Could I really…?” “Could you really what?” a voice came from behind me. I spun to see Fiona standing there, arms folded, a curious smile on her face. “Fiona! You scared me.” “Sorry.” She peered at the book in my hand. “Werewolves? That’s… unexpected. Planning a Halloween prank?”

“You’re not going to say anything?! You’re just going to sit there and watch? Rafaele was right about you! You’re a useless, good-for-nothing bastard! You’ll let an innocent girl be slaughtered?!” His head jerks up, fury flashing. Fangs bare, sharp and glistening. My chest seizes at the sight—it’s the second time he’s shown them to me, and it still rattles me. Then, slowly, deliberately, he grabs the girl in his lap by the head and sinks his fangs into her neck. Her soft cry breaks through the room as his eyes turn pitch black, veins crawling up his throat like ink. It’s brutal. Wrong. I look away, wishing I could unhear her pain.

But my mind betrays me, flooding with images of Brian. He's there in my fantasy, bursting into the stall, his eyes dark with that same hunger I saw in the conference room. "You think you can walk away from me like that, Jane?" he growls in my imagination, his voice echoing in my head as he grabs my wrists, slamming them above my head against the stall wall. I hate how much I want it—his body crowding mine, his free hand yanking my blouse open, buttons popping while he pinches my nipples hard, twisting them until I arch and whimper.

Brian shouted before gripping my neck into a tight grip. How dare he call me a bitch? I hated being cursed at the most. As soon as he gripped my neck, I started feeling a burning sensation in my body. The same burning sensation that I used to get two years back whenever my powers used to get out of my hands. However, this time it was a little different. This time it felt like they were trying to engulf me. Seeing the flashback of the evil things he had done to people around him and the number of the innocent girls he had killed in the name of pleasure, I couldn’t help but open my eyes angrily.

Kyle opened it quickly and swirled inside. Aidan was sat at his desk. He swiveled in his chair and gasped when he saw Kyle standing there. “Can I help you?” he said, adjusting his glasses. Kyle pulled up a spare chair and sat himself down, his face uncomfortably close to Aidan’s. “As a matter of fact, you can,” he said. He smirked as Aidan leaned back, trying to get some space between them. It was then that Kyle noticed the book that lay open on Aidan’s desk. He hadn’t been able to read all that well in his human days, but he could still recognize the word vampire.

The shock of this animal’s presence raced through her senses, as if she had just sniffed ammonia. She looked to her right and zoomed in. There, in the corner, was a large Rottweiler. He sat up slowly, stared at her, and snarled. He broke into a low, guttural growl. It was Butch. She remembered him now. The Colemans’ nasty Rottweiler. As if the Colemans needed a vicious animal to add to their picture of mayhem.

I called out softly, turning around. Sure enough, the Book was floating in the air a few inches away. I beckoned at it, my frustration at it completely forgotten. It floated towards me, and landed on the table right at my front. “What’s going on? What's happening to the Vampires?” I questioned it, hoping that I'd find answers. It flipped its pages, and finally stopped. I squinted my eyes to read out the characters. ‘Fēáli ét gûiq cæli,’ were the characters written.

Silence crashed through the hall. My breathing turned ragged and my vision blurred red. Even Serena stumbled backward. Then Aiden slowly pushed himself off the wall. His dark eyes locked onto mine and he smiled wider. Like he finally found something interesting. My wolf snarled. For the first time in my life, I wanted to destroy someone. And his name was Aiden Cross. I left without looking at anyone. I knew my father would be angry with me because of it but right now I didn't care. I couldn't tolerate seeing that jerk’s face anymore.

She straightened, a small, satisfied smile playing on her lips. “Well, I think I’ll go see the Ironfang’s. It’s been a long time. At least he paid well.” At that very moment, it seemed the Elder of the Ironfangs sensed what had happened. The cup of wine he held shattered in his hand, shards scattering on the ground. His old bones seemed to vibrate with a surge of anger. He slammed his hand on the wooden table, the sharp crack echoing in the quiet night. As he stood, turning to enter the compound, she appeared directly behind him in a blinding flash of speed. He paused, his body tensing, as if he knew she was there without even seeing her.
