I was about to see a time before the one I read. “A diary?” I ask, gingerly picking up the book. “No, a journal. And proof that every family is as fucked up as yours.”

Dad set down the newspaper, his gaze dropping to the point book. "Myra," Dad said slowly, "is this Olympiad math class really that important?" "Yes, it is." I stared into his eyes. "It's my only wish." The atmosphere froze for a few seconds. Dad picked up the pen, ready to sign. My heart was in my throat. Suddenly, Patrick threw the remote control hard at the TV screen. "I want those shoes! I want those shoes! I want them now!" He lay on the ground, rolling around and crying his heart out.

"Are you seriously crying because you want your mom to buy you a book?" "Yes. I want to read it." "So if I buy it for you now, you'll read it?" Iby questioned. He couldn't believe a six-year-old could actually read books as big as that. Maryam nodded with a smile, "Yes." He started walking to the shop, "Okay I will buy it and you will read every word out loud for me." She held his hand, dragging him back. "No Uncle Iby. I can't." He furrowed his brows, "Why? I thought you said you wanted to read?"

His voice had changed from that of a commanding alpha to the tone of a playful boy. He led her to his father's office. He knew the book he wanted was there along with his father's books on philosophy. First though, he reached for the large leather volume, turned to her, and put the book into her hands. "This is my father's copy of the bible. It's a book that needs to be touched, but after today if you never want to see another, I'll make sure there are none in our home."

Always the book. It lay in my lap now, its weight disproportionate to its size. I traced my fingers along its cover, each motion an act of both reverence and desperation. This was the last piece of my father I possessed, aside from the necklace that never left my throat. If the Queen would not believe me, perhaps the book would give me answers. Or perhaps it would only remind me of how little I knew. Flynn’s voice startled me from my reverie. “I’m surprised she didn’t believe us.”

A massive wave of blue static crawled up his body. The bot froze, his eyes turning into "Error" signs. But the street was still folding. The world was becoming a tiny, crushed ball of paper. We burst through the lab doors and into the flames. In the center of the fire, I saw a man. He wasn't a wolf or a machine. He was my father. He was holding a real, paper notebook. He looked at me and smiled.

He continued. His thunderous voice sent shivers down my spine that I was shaking on the spot. Why the hell was he so angry about me touching his book? What was in the book that he was so desperate to hide from me that made him angry when I touched it? Well, I wouldn't know until I sneaked out the book from here and read it. I tried to avoid my father's eyes and looked around the study. But immediately my eyes caught another title of a book written, "The generational curse of Alphas and how to break it."

I step away from the book to see if it will open if dad and I switch places, but It stays closed. “Maybe it can Sense the Magic in me and will only open to someone who possesses magic?” I say. “Maybe sweetie, I guess we’ll have to get your mom in here to help test that theory.” dad says.
