“That’s—that’s—” “He established a scholarship in my mother’s name.” I could barely get the words out. “He remembered her. He honored her.” Another box. Inside was a leather-bound book. I opened it carefully. Photos. But not a regular album. These were moments I didn’t even know had been captured. Professional photographs, beautifully composed. Me at Veridian’s opening night, radiant with joy. Me laughing with Maya. Me standing in front of the restaurant, looking up at the building with pride. Me at my desk, working, completely absorbed.

I drop back into the chair, flipping the cover back to reveal the first page. My breath catches in my throat. Delicate lines trace the profile of a face, dark hair cascading down over bare shoulders. I’d recognize that face anywhere. I see it in the mirror every day. I flip the page. The next sketch is close-up of my face, a wide smile stretching my lips, eyes crinkling at the corners. It’s intricate and detailed, the shading so exquisite that it’s reminiscent of a black and white photograph. It looks like I’m laughing, blissfully happy.

I opened the book. The pages were thin, soft from age, the kind of paper that had been turned so many times it had lost its crispness and taken on the quality of cloth instead. The writing was beautifully slanted, the hand of someone who had a great deal to say and a finite amount of patience to say it.

He looked like a man ready to work. “Take anything relevant,” he ordered the guards softly. “Take ten books each. Find anything on the goddess lines, on remarkable gifts, and on old healer rites. Start now.” We dispersed quickly, hands skimming spines and pulling out volumes. My fingers found a thin book with cracked leather. Its title was faded, written in English from an old time. I opened it and scanned. Pages moved. It was slower work than I thought; some books were full of ritual and nothing more.

Chapter 31 Fine Lines A quiet hum settled over Gianna’s apartment, the kind of silence that spoke more loudly than words ever could. The low jazz tune trickling from the Bluetooth speaker barely filled the corners of the room, its melancholy saxophone curling like smoke around the cluttered edges of her world.

I leaned closer, anticipation buzzing in my veins— Only to freeze. Books. Shelves and shelves of them, stretching from top to bottom. Old ones. Ancient-looking, with worn spines and faded gold lettering. Dusty, but organized with meticulous care. My shoulders slumped. “Seriously?” I muttered. Why warn me off if this was all there was? Then I saw it. A small, folded piece of white paper resting innocently among the books. My heart kicked. I snatched it up and unfolded it— And rage hit me full-force.

I hadn’t focused on his face. It was there, yes, but softer. Less defined. What stood out more was the way he held himself. The tension in his shoulders, the slight tilt of his head, the way his hands rested; like they were steady, but not relaxed. Like he was holding something in. The lines weren’t perfect because I was distracted with… everything. Some of the lines were rough, unfinished. But the feeling was clear. I braced myself for the criticism to come. “Interesting.” Dr. Hale’s voice was softer this time. She stepped a little closer to the sketch on display.

I stated. "Open your books to page forty-two," I said. Everyone else shuffled their papers. Caleb didn't move. He didn't even have a book. He just leaned forward, his chest pressing against the desk, never breaking eye contact. "The brain protects itself after an injury," I explained, forcing myself to look right at him. "It deletes pieces of the timeline to protect you." His gaze suddenly dropped to my lips. He held it there for one long, agonizing second, then snapped back to my eyes.My throat went completely dry.

Sinclair and notice his hair is now disheveled due to the amount of times he has run his hand through the strands. “First days am I right.” That, at least, earns me a chuckle, and with that my mind settles.
