Flicker In The Dark Novels & Stories

My eyelids fluttered. And then.. Darkness.

She pretended to focus again, but I caught the flicker of her grin in the reflection of the monitor. Then the lights flickered. It was quick, just one of those city-wide surges, but it made her freeze for a second, shoulders tensing. When it happened again, she flinched outright. I blinked. “You okay?” “I’m fine,” she said too quickly. I tilted my head. “The genius hacker is afraid of the dark?” “Afraid is a strong word.” I grinned. “You sure? Because you look a little…” “Finish that sentence, and I’ll delete your entire music library.”

Then I changed my expression to anger as I watched the corner next to the light bulb somewhat shake. If anyone saw me they would think that I was deep in thought. A few pieces of stone fell down from the floor. I crawled to my bed and lay down facing the light bulb in the room that flickered. This was also the only light in the room. Under my breath, I counted the seconds as the light bulb. "One, two, three, four, five, six, seven…" Flicker "One, two, three, four, five…" Flicker "One, two..”

The light outside flickered once, then went out completely. Darkness swallowed everything.

He blinked hard, once, twice, trying to force his vision to settle, but the darkness was still oppressive, swallowing the room whole. Tiny motes of light drifted through the black. For a second, his brain wanted to think they were absurd fireflies, wrong before he realized they were tiny shards of glass and scorched insulation hanging in the air. They caught what little illumination there was, winking like dying stars before spiraling to the floor. Somewhere to his right, a blown-out control panel sparked, a blue-white flare so bright it left a ghost-image burned in his vision. Then darkness again.

But then the lights above my head were flickering, and my laptop, which was showing the wallpaper of my favorite doll at Beauty Kill the Doll, somehow disappeared and also flickered as if it were broken. If I were a normal child, I would have freaked out by now and probably already went outside and called someone for assistance to relieve my'scared' heart. But who am I? I was just a woman in her 20s who, as an introverted person, only knew how to watch horror movies. This simple thing, such as light flickering, doesn't scare me at all. It's just that... It was really irritating after I did not see my favorite doll.
