Formatting Dialogue In A Novel Novels & Stories

“You described my hands doing something I’ve never actually done to you.” He turns the page toward me and points at the passage and I read my own words back – the fictionalized desk scene, adapted from yesterday’s supply closet encounter but expanded into something more elaborate, a version where his fingers trace a pattern across her stomach that descends lower in a sequence I invented because the real version was too fast and efficient and I needed the literary version to linger where the real version didn’t have time to. “Creative license,” I say.

Then sent it. He replied a few minutes later. Yes. You? Not yet. Eat something. I will. Pause. Then: Lock the doors. I almost rolled my eyes. They’re locked. Okay. That was it. Conversation ended. Just like that. I dropped the phone again. Same pattern. Short. Straight. It was easier this way. No long explanations. No unnecessary questions. I stood up again. Walked to the bedroom. Sat on the bed. Then laid back again. Same position as before.

Novel's POV A soft tap landed on my shoulder, but I refused to budge. A few seconds later, light, feathered kisses brushed against my cheek, and despite my exhaustion, a small smile tugged at the corners of my lips. “Stop,” I murmured, keeping my eyes squeezed shut. “It’s morning, Novel. It’s time to go,” Alexei whispered against my ear. My eyes flew open instantly.

The middle section of the chapter was practical, as she was about everything, and I read it carefully because the practical sections were the ones that would matter most. She wrote: The conversation itself lasted four hours and twenty-three minutes by the farmhouse clock. I want to describe its structure because knowing it helped me. It came in three phases. Phase one: Presentation. It showed me the version of my mother it had prepared. It did not speak immediately. It let me look.
