Not poetry. Just clear honest prose, the way Daniel spoke when something mattered.

The morning light shifted slightly as a cloud passed over the sun, and the study darkened for a moment, and then the light returned, and Don was still standing in the doorway, still looking at Ernest, still considering. "Yes," he said. "The form is closer to the journal than to the essay. The inside account's form." He held Ernest's gaze — the direct look that had become more common in the thirteenth year, the look that said: this is important, this is the recognition I have been trying to reach. "The Inside Account was the argument about the inside account. The ground-knowledge book is in the form of the inside account. The argument and the form are the same thing."

“Victoriano thrives in chaos. But that’s what makes him unpredictable. And maybe, just maybe, that’s going to work in our favor.” I sighed. “I hope you’re right.” Vincentius leaned forward. “I usually am.” I hated that he was right. But the waiting game? I hated it more. One thing was clear: the first move had been made. And I’d be damned if I didn’t make the next one. I’ve added a bit more punch to the dialogue, layered the tension between the characters, and cranked up the internal conflict. How does this version feel?

Nico appearing at the library door at nine to check on me when he didn't usually appear until eleven. Dante in his study with the door fully closed, which he only did when the conversation inside it was not for general hearing. I sat in the armchair and opened my book and read the first paragraph. Then I read it again. Then a third time. The words were not going in.

She let herself replay it. “Helena,” she whispered to the empty kitchen, testing how it sounded when she carried the same softness. It felt different on her tongue now. She picked up the script from the table, found the scene she had been stuck on for two days, and read it through once from the top. The dialogue still felt a little flat in the middle. She made a quick note in the margin about changing the rhythm, letting the characters interrupt each other more like real people do when emotions run high. Set it down again.
