She scoffed. “You’re such a guy. You can’t use a car as your profile pic, it’s too…tacky,” I raised a questioning brow. “Why not…a picture of me?” She batted her eyelashes at me.

“Look, he’s my favorite cartoon character.” Examining the picture right in front of her face, Leonica’s eyebrows knitted. It was a white bunny, or at least a creature dressed in a bunny suit. Two pairs of elongated teeth that stuck out from the front of his upper lip, funny looking round ear, dark brown hair like weed and it had the height of a growing panda give or take. ‘Gosh, where does he get his taste in characters from?” Leonica thought, trying to hide how much the character and his wish worried her.

A message bubble lit up under his name, cheerful and oblivious. Just another one of his dry, stupid jokes—something about his dinner being so terrible he was convinced the restaurant was trying to assassinate him with undercooked chicken. He'd probably attached one of those ridiculous GIFs he was always finding, something animated and silly that was meant to make me laugh.

I clicked the chat, and a message popped up on the screen. It simply said, “Happy Birthday.” No other words. As if he was going to discuss business with me. He sent it this morning, and I hadn’t replied. I took a deep breath as I shifted my gaze to his avatar. I clicked on it, and his profile picture quickly filled the screen. It was a cartoon picture of a beautiful little bird. This cute avatar didn’t match his serious demeanor, puzzling many. But I knew why he had chosen it. This image was drawn by our old friend, Annika Summers, the woman Nathan had loved with all his heart.
