In the distance, I hear howling. Garth looks up and reaches for his rifle, but he doesn’t pull it around, not yet. “Becky, they haven’t been honest with you. Your mother is very sick. In fact, she’s dying.” He takes a few steps toward me, a pained expression on his face.
My eyes widen as I imagine my poor mother home, sick in her bed, possibly dying, and me so far away.
