’ That was a good question. Gideon knew about this and didn’t say anything until it was too late. My hands itched to snap his neck. “And you waited this long to tell someone?” I growled. “At first, I was terrified. I didn’t want to become like your father,” Gideon whispered. “Then, I attempted to search for information. No one would believe me. They thought I was crazy. Silverfang caught me, I told them the truth. They thought I had gone senile and put me here.”

He was craving coffee, and also wanted to get rid of the constantly chattering Jerry, even if just for a moment. "I'll be right back," Jerry said, darting outside. Eugene watched Jerry through the glass window as he disappeared into the distance, then touched his forehead. Deep wrinkles had already formed between his brows. Thoughts he had deliberately pushed to the back of his mind came rushing forward. Derek. The FBI. Luca Datero. And... At the last face that came to mind, Eugene bit his thumbnail.

I use my backpack as a shield against the cold raindrops and run through the darkness that rules the university parking lot. My criminal law class ended fifteen minutes late, so the area feels even more desolate than usual. There’s a guard booth just a few meters away, but I get the same bizarre sensation I’ve had the past few nights: the back of my neck prickling, a warning deep in my mind, like someone is watching me from the shadows.

You are such a cowardly creature who wants to hide instead of facing your enemy. If you want me down, then show me your f*cking face. Don't use my wife against me!” I uttered in my angry tone.

Gideon, one of the kidnappers, crawled to the phone and answered with a simple “hello.” The voice on the other end, male and authoritative, asked, “Did you manage to execute the job?” Gideon looked at his scratched hands and face, signs of recent turmoil, and hesitated before answering. “There was a problem,” he finally admitted. The male voice demanded details. “What kind of problem?” Gideon glanced at his two fallen comrades on the floor, dead, their bodies marked by claws, and began to explain with a certain uncertainty in his voice. “The kids... they're not normal.”

"Why didn't Gideon tell me? Did he know about the medical records?" "Gideon doesn't know," I said. I leaned forward, my voice dropping to a whisper. "Gideon is a machine, Amara. He was built to process data and produce stability. He looks at a problem and finds the most efficient route to solve it. He saw your family's debt as a variable to be balanced. He didn't see the crime behind it. He doesn't know his mother engineered the debt to force the marriage." Amara leaned back. The leather of the booth squeaked under her weight. She looked out the window at the dark street.

“Of course I would.” “So there we are.” Silver leaned back, took a deep breath. “What if Briley wasn’t the only cop that Gideon had in his pocket, and who he had investigating The Road Devils? Remember, Briley found out about us long before we even knew who she was… what if someone else out there was also checking us out for Gideon? Someone who knows our names, and our faces from criminal records and military records, and who knows where we are, and who knows all of our business addresses?”

I am sure it is one of those two names. A realization struck me. Gasp! Gideon is a hybrid! A werewolf and Vampire! That's why he can read my thoughts, he's strong and I swear I sometimes see him mindlink one of the MIB's. Mystery solved! I swear I am getting smarter everyday. I don't know why but I think Gideon served me more food than the usual. Gasp! Does he want to eat my cake without me knowing?! He doesn't even like cakes! I narrow my eyes at him while chewing my food. Pissed off that I figure out his plan. His eyes comically widen and his fork is midway to his mouth when he saw me glaring at him.

She slipped out, her gown trailing behind her. I raced toward Gideon’s townhouse, its clean glass a contrast to tonight’s facade. Inside, his tech lair was lit up with monitors, and coffee cups strewn across the floor. Gideon, wearing a hoodie and pecking at a keyboard, his glasses reflecting lines of code. “I got something,” he said, without looking up. “The hack’s messy — leads back to a Lovtan server.”

Before I can even move, my front door is kicked open with a deafening crash. I freeze. Heavy footsteps. Shadows moving. Then, hands grab me. Strong, rough hands. I try to struggle, but they’re too powerful. They drag me out of my room, down the hall, into the living room. And that’s when I see him. Gideon. The leader of the Dogs of Hell. He’s worse than Daniel, I think. A true monster. A man who doesn’t just kill— he enjoys it. According to what I have heard. He stands in front of me now, a wicked grin stretching across his face. In his hand, he holds a gun. And it’s pointed straight at my head.
