After dinner, Ginnie excused herself to her room. She cast aside all the chaotic thoughts in her head and instead got out the easel and brushes she had prepared from the closet. Even though her arm was almost fully healed, she still had no courage to try drawing again. Besides, it had been three years since she last drew. She did not know whether she could return to her prime. Ginnie formed the outline of what she wanted to draw in her head and started skillfully mixing the colors to get the shades she wanted. But when she lifted the brush, she seemed to be cursed with a petrification spell.

Wren's whole body goes still. The spoon stops halfway to the pot, water hissing against the burner behind her, and for one full second she forgets to breathe at all. "What pictures, baby?" Fern doesn't answer right away. She opens the sketchbook instead, flips past pages of careful, precise drawings, houses and dogs and one recurring sketch of three stick figures holding hands under a tree, until she lands on a page near the back. It's a face. A rough, five-year-old attempt at a face, dark hair, a hard line for a jaw, done in the same grey pencil Fern uses for everything she isn't sure how to name yet.

Bella nods and says she’ll join me inside later. I hurry into my room, not to take my drugs, but to recreate that drawing from memory. There, hidden behind a curtain of weeping carbon-fiber vines, was a small, dilapidated shack. "What is this?" I asked. "The only place the grid can't see," Xander said. He pulled back the vines, and I saw a wall covered in jagged, hand-drawn charcoal sketches. I gasped. The sketches weren't of buildings or machines. They were of us. There was a drawing of a man and a woman standing in a mountain of gold; a drawing of a girl with a wooden ring; a drawing of a man with orange eyes holding a woman in the rain.
